An evaluation of the implementation of Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Program in Malaysian secondary schools

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the implementation of Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Program in Malaysian secondary schools. The evaluation of the program is crucial to investigate the effectiveness of the implemented ETA Program in motivating and enhancing the students‟ interest to use English language (EL). This study employed both quantitative methods and qualitative methods in data collection, which involved a total of nine rural secondary schools in seven states around Malaysia. This study involved a total of 59 EL teachers and 399 students. Based on the findings gathered, there were discrepancies in the actual implementation as compared to the intended objectives of the ETA Program. A few of the intended objectives of the ETA Program were not achieved due to improper execution of the program in the schools. Abstract

The high percentage of students who are still struggling with the English language is worrisome, even though there are many well-planned strategies and education policies that are developed to resolve this problem. It is a universal belief that learning a foreign language at a young age through reading plays an important role. Accordingly, the aim of this research is to design, develop and evaluate an interactive storybook application combined with suitable multimedia elements and features to encourage children to read. The interactive storybook entitled 'Jack and the Dirty Smelly Beast' was developed using Instructional System Design (ISD) and Rapid Prototyping model. An experimental study was conducted with 17 respondents between the ages of 6 – 8 years to test the effects of the multimedia elements and features in improving children’s learning. Exploring the imagined communities, identities and investment among Malaysian undergraduate students

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of imagined communities, identities, and investment, as well as the linguistic behaviours among high and low proficiency ESL learners. The data of this qualitative study were collected through indepth interviews and written narratives from 12 high-proficiency undergraduate ESL learners and 10 low-proficiency undergraduate ESL learners, who were selected based on the learners_ Malaysian University English Test (MUET) result. The data were analysed through thematic analysis, to generate themes and patterns related to the participants_ imagined communities, identities, investment, and linguistic behaviours. The findings revealed that high-proficiency learners_ imagined communities, identities and investment are reflective of their professional aspirations and career success, global communication, travel, and cultural adaptation, educational influence and inspiration, as well as their social and peer influence. Chromatographic fingerprint analysis for determining the presence of vitexin and isovitexin on seven varieties of ficus deltoidea

Abstract

Ficus deltoidea Jack or locally known as mas cotek from the family of Moraceae has been acknowledged for its occurrence of several varieties based on the variations of leaf morphology, namely F. deltoidea var. angustifolia (Miq.) Corner, F. deltoidea var. bilobata Corner, F. deltoidea var. kunstleri (King) Corner, F. deltoidea var. lutescens (Desf.) Corner, F. deltoidea var. trengganuensis Corner, F. deltoidea var. motleyana and F. deltoidea var. deltoidea Jack. In this work, we report on the chemical profiles using chromatographic techniques on the seven varieties of F. deltoidea by analysing the presence of the bioactive compounds, vitexin and isovitexin and characterising the other major peaks in the chromatograms. Observation on the HPLC chromatogram showed the presence of both compounds in all samples except FDv. K (vitexin only) and FDv. I. This study sought to identify Filipino children’s music that can induce happy emotion through a survey, to develop emotion-based teaching aids utilizing the identified music and to find out if the use of the emotion-based teaching aids can improve the performance in addition and subtraction of grade 1 Filipino pupils. Sukan petanque merupakan sukan yang dimainkan menggunakan bola yang diperbuat daripada logam. Pointing dan shooting merupakan pergerakan yang utama dalam sukan petanque. Tujuan kajian ini ialah untuk mengetahui tahap kecergasan pelajar Institut Perguruan Tawau Sabah yang belajar sepenuh masa di institut perguruan ini. Pelajar ini mewakili pelbagai unit dan opsyen pengajian. Antara unit dan opsyen pengajian yang terdapat di Institut Perguruan Tawau ialah Unit PISMP bagi opsyen Sains, Unit PISMP bagi Unit Matematik, Unit KPLI bagi opsyen Bahasa Inggeris, KPLI bagi opsyen Matematik dan PISMK bagi opsyen Pendidikan Jasmani. Differences of attacking shots percentage between winners and losers among elite lawn bowlers in selected matches

Abstract

Lawn Bowls is a game that takes a short time to learn but a lifetime to be an expert and master. This sport requires consistency, accuracy, focus, and precision the aim is to be as close as possible to the jack. The purpose of this study is to compare the differences in attacking shots percentage between winners and losers among world-class lawn bowlers. 14 games were analysed which makes (n=28) data collected for this study. Group one was the winner of the match (n=14) and another group was the loser in the match (n=14). All data for 14 games were collected based on 6 types of shots in lawn bowls. The first type is defending shots (draw and position) while the second type is attacking shots (trail, tap and lie, running and drive). Data analyses were conducted after all the data had been collected.
