Implementing the teaching of phonics in Malaysian primary schools

Abstract

The Standard-Based English Language Curriculum for Malaysian Primary Schools was introduced by the Malaysian Ministry of Education in 2011 beginning with the teaching of Year 1 pupils. The curriculum is modular in design comprising the Listening and Speaking, Reading, Writing, and Language Arts modules. An innovation introduced in the curriculum was the teaching of early reading skills using phonics as a method in the Reading Module. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the Year 1 English Language teachers participating in the study understood the innovation, the problems that they faced with regard to it and how they implemented it in their classrooms. A survey questionnaire was distributed to English Year 1 primary school teachers and case studies of selected teachers were conducted. The data were analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. Abstract

Kajian ini bertujuan menentukan pengaruh tahap literasi kewangan, pengurusan kewangan, hutang, dan faktor demografik (jantina, umur, tahap pendidikan dan zon kajian) terhadap kesejahteraan kewangan dalam kalangan pekerja di Zon Tengah (Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur dan Wilayah Persekutuan Putrajaya) dan Zon Utara (Perak dan Kedah), Malaysia. Pendekatan kuantitatif yang melibatkan seramai 403 orang pekerja yang berkhidmat dalam sektor awam dan swasta terlibat dalam kajian ini. Sampel diperoleh melalui pengedaran borang soal selidik secara dalam talian melaui e-mel kepada responden yang bekerja dalam organisasi di zon kajian. Abstract

Kajian ini bertujuan untuk membangunkan modul pembelajaran interaktif bagi topik kegravitian semesta Newton dan mengkaji kebolehgunaan modul pembelajaran interaktif bagi topik kegravitian semesta Newton dalam kalangan pelajar Fizik tingkatan empat. Reka bentuk kajian ini adalah pembangunan yang berdasarkan reka bentuk model instruksional ADDIE yang terdiri daripada lima fasa iaitu analisis, reka bentuk, pembangunan, pelaksanaan dan penilaian. Kaedah persampelan rawak mudah digunakan untuk mendapatkan sampel seramai 52 orang pelajar Fizik tingkatan empat. Kajian ini menggunakan soal selidik kebolehgunaan yang mengandungi 21 item. Instrumen kajian yang digunakan adalah borang penilaian kesahan pakar dan soal selidik kebolehgunaan dengan menggunakan skala likert empat mata. The role of senior leader team on the formative assessment practices among primary school teachers in Petaling

Abstract

Formative assessment has become a most discussed topic when many countries recognized the importance of assessment for learning in enhancing students’ holistic development. Most of the times, teachers are not quite clear with the differences between assessment of learning and assessment for learning. In Malaysia, teachers still feel uncomfortable with the implementation of formative assessment compared to summative assessment due to the heavy workload to prepare the tests by themselves. Hence, this study was conducted to examine the role of leaders and how the leader’s role was associated with teachers’ formative assessment practices in schools. An online questionnaire was administered to a total of 198 randomly selected teachers from 25 public primary schools in Petaling. Printmaking is an approach to art-making which need patience and good discipline throughout the process. Usually, the production of printmaking artwork is done manually, starting with the production of the drawing, transferring the image or design onto the block, and continuing to the next processes to deliver the idea. Historically, much evidence has been proven that the usual process of making printmaking artwork takes a long time because it has to follow an organized process. Predicting restaurant revenue using machine learning

Abstract

This paper studied the restaurant branch’s revenue to determine the best strategic location with period of study from 1996 until 2014. On the other hand, the paper examined multiple linear regression, decision tree regression, random forest regression and support vector regression to forecasting approach that will likely generate the highest accuracy during validation process in predicting the revenue. Analysis have resulted that support vector regression gives the lowest of error. Some recommendation been proposed for successful plans toward revenue growth which applicable to adopt in the company. Financial literacy, digital skills and personality traits in relation to entrepreneurial spirit among accounting undergraduates

Abstract

The objective of this study is to develop a framework by examining the relationship between financial literacy, digital skills and personality traits with Accounting undergraduates’ entrepreneurship spirit, including the role of personal financial management as a mediator. A quantitative research design was used to answer eight research questions and six hypotheses. A questionnaire was adapted from multiple scholars to measure financial literacy, digital skills, personality traits, personal financial management and entrepreneurship spirit. Two hundred and forty-eight Accounting undergraduates were selected as a sample through simple random sampling. Descriptive analysis using SPSS revealed that Accounting undergraduates have a high level of financial literacy, digital skills and personal financial management, with average level of entrepreneurship spirit. The use of pupils L1 in teaching English vocabulary

Abstract

Pupils who had undergone four years of primary education were found to lack vocabulary knowledge in learning English. Thus, this study aimed to examine the views of English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers and pupils on the use of pupils’ first language (L1) in the teaching of English language vocabulary. It also investigated the teaching practices in particular the strategies employed by an ESL teacher to teach vocabulary using the pupils’ L1. The participants were an ESL teacher and 24 Year Five pupils in a rural school in Perak. The sample consists of 9 boys and 15 girls who were all Malays.
