A spectral critique of Hong Kong films: a reading of the urban spectre: Dr. Esther MK Cheungs essays in Hong Kong film studies
Ng, Kok-Hwa
Collected in the Urban Spectre are six essays (five being Chinese translations and one originally written in Chinese) of the late Dr. Esther MK Cheung (1958-2015) on Hong Kong films and urban problems. The aim of this compilation and translation is to construct a framework for analyzing Hong Kong films – spectral analysis or spectral critique, so as to guide more Chinese readers to ponder on the following question: How and why has there been a lasting presence of a lingering crisis consciousness, “homeless/rootless” feelings, and illusion of ruins in Hong Kong films since the late 1970s? This paper is divided into two parts. The first part interprets the references of “phantasmagoria”, “spectre” or “uncanny” in the book, and examines how the author manipulates the “spectral critique”. Extending from this book, the second part ruminates on whether Hong Kong films continue to be phantasmagoria (the discussion in the book stops at the films in 2010), and whether we c.....

Sounds of Lisu music to new music for guitar and string quartet
Suwanpakdee, Suppabhorn
The chamber work Mood, scored for Guitar and String Quartet, was inspired by my fieldwork in Pang Ma Pha, Mae Hong Son province in the Northern part of Thailand. I worked with the musician guru Fu Deua who taught me about folk music of the Lisu, the hill tribe. I decided to adapt this music for a Western ensemble to connect a new audience with this little-known musical culture. Mood uses standard string techniques such as plucking and strumming to imitate the sounds of the Sue-bue, a Lisu three-stringed instrument. My compositional process was an exploration of the integration of musical traditions. Through the sound of Western Instruments and the procedures of development, variation, and improvisation, Mood expresses and transforms the original musical idiom it borrows from the Lisu’s tune. This paper describes the process behind Mood, both regarding its underlying philosophy and the compositional procedures I used. Besides, I discuss how Mood relates to other forms of dance music w.....

Shiu, Wen-wei
The aim of this paper is to review the history of Chinese language education in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia, and state the tortuous and difficult processes that intellectuals had to go through to pass on the torch of Chinese language education in a changing world. Based on Ch’ien Mu, Lin Yutang, and Shen Muyu's stories for promoting Chinese language education after 1949, this paper states how intellectuals implemented Chinese language and humanistic spirit into the education systems in foreign lands, as well as how they put into practice their care for lives and passed on the torch of Chinese language education. Ch’ien Mu established an academic institution in the British colony. He had to face the fact that mainland China abandoned the tradition at the time and he put all his efforts into saving the critical situation, which should not only be regarded as a legend in a poverty situation, but we shall also carefully study how he valued the importance of literature, humanit.....
