The essential role of teaching pragmatic in the Iraqi EFL classroom

This study described the necessity for teaching pragmatic in EFL classroom, research on pragmatics in EFL learning and teaching. The study was presented by a public curriculum lead that prioritizes the necessity for teaching students’ pragmatic to increase their ability to use language successfully in social and academic communications. Additionally, Many English teachers fail to offer pragmatic ability in classroom that is because the lack of understanding of teaching pragmatic. There is increasing material of studies on value of teaching pragmatic on increasing EFL students' communication, as well as usage of request. This paper explained English students’ pragmatics development, students’ pragmatics competence in chosen speech acts, request strategies that they used in gaining pragmatic ability. Mentoring practise during practicum: the perspectives of Malaysian pre-service English language teachers

This study investigates the issues in mentoring practise based on pre-service English language teachers? perspectives about their mentoring experience. This study involved 56 pre-service teachers who had completed their practicum. The study used a quantitative data collection method whereby a questionnaire survey was distributed to the research participants. The data from the questionnaire was then analysed by using SPSS to generate descriptive statistics for item analysis. The findings were discussed based on five mentoring factors which are personal attributes, system requirements, pedagogical knowledge, modelling, and feedback. The findings show that modelling and pedagogical knowledge received among the lowest mean scores indicating the moderate satisfactory level of mentoring experience received by the pre-service teachers. The use of imported CEFR-aligned English language textbooks in Malaysian schools: issues and concerns

Imported English language textbooks were introduced in Malaysian schools as part of the Common European Framework Reference of Language (CEFR)’s roll-out in this country through the establishment of the Standards Based English Language Curriculum (SBELC), which is the official English language curriculum in Malaysia. However, concerns were raised with regards to the use of these textbooks. Despite advocates clamoring for the textbooks’ alignment to the CEFR and their contents, critiques were quick to point out their imbalanced cultural content, high lexical density, lack of supplementary materials, steep price point, ambiguous selection procedure, and fitness with the goals and objective of Malaysia’s language program and English curriculum. Doubts were also expressed about Malaysian English teachers’ preparedness to teach by using these books. Fostering critical thinking using graphic organizers in English language reading class

Fostering students critical thinking (CT) is an increasing concern in EFL classrooms in China as many students struggle to utilize the skill, particularly in EFL reading comprehension classes. This study investigated the effects of graphic organizers (GOs) on 60 Chinese senior high school students CT skills (analyzing and generalizing) in EFL reading classes. This study adopted a quasi-experimental mixed-method research design involving an experiment and an interview. The findings of this study showed the positive impacts of GOs on students CT skills. After the intervention, the results of the experimental group improved significantly. The findings showed that GOs could effectively improve the analytical and generalization skills of Chinese high school English reading class students. The students in the experimental group reported that the instructions received were motivating, increased their comprehension, made them more focused on reading and aware of CT skills and how to apply them.....
