| 1 | 2015 Article | Making a living: pro poor tourism in hot spring recreational park of Sungai Klah, Sungkai, Perak, Malaysia Che Leh Fauziah, Omar Baharudin, Ahmad Baharom Azmi, Poverty is perceived as something unending in most poor and developing countries and it still occurs in areas including which have become tourist attraction centres. Tourism is an economic sector that is increasingly growing in importance to most poor and developing countries especially in rural areas and in the interior. Tourism activities have the ability to stimulate regional development rapidly which in turn benefits the locals. However, there is also a situation whereby its development is not equally beneficial to the government, investors and locals despite the rapidly developing tourism activities in that area. Pro Poor Tourism (PPT) is a mechanism that is able to benefit the poor at tourism centres; several strategies and approaches were identified as capable of increasing the cooperative bonding between the government, private sectors and local population as well as providing benefits to all three parties without ignoring the locals in the area. This study aims to present the ..... 2367 hits |

| 4 | 2021 Article | O-alkylated quercetins with selective acetylcholinesterase and B-secretase inhibitions from Melicope glabra leaves, and their flavonols profile by LC-ESI-Q-TOF/MS Park, Ki Hun Intensive investigation of phytochemicals from edible Melicope glabra leaves provided a series of O-alkylated quercetins (1?13). The quercetin 1 bearing prenyl and methyl motif showed potent inhibition to human acetylcholinesterase (hAChE) with mixed type I mode, while quercetin was inactive. The position of methyl group was also a critical factor to hAChE inhibition: 1 (4?-O-methyl, IC50 = 12.7 ?M) vs 2 (3?-O-methyl, IC50 = 119 ?M). Inhibitory potency was doubly confirmed with the binding affinity (KSV) based on fluorescence quenching. O-Methyl groups on quercetin were observed to influence ?-secretase (BACE1) inhibition. Thus, O-methylated quercetins (4?6) displayed potential inhibitions against BACE1 with IC50 values of 1.3, 4.1, and 14.1 ?M, respectively. All compounds (3?6) have noncompetitive mode to BACE1. Additionally, all quercetin derivatives (1?13) had antioxidant potentials against different radical sources (ABTS, ORAC and FRAP). The UPLC-ESI-Q-TOF/MS indicated that the lea..... 810 hits |

| 9 | 2024 Article | Mapping and digitizing Sarawak bioacoustic for soundscape composition - the Bako National Park project Hellenda Harmon The entirety of sounds that can be heard at any particular time and place is referred to as the soundscape. Similar to how a landscape presents itself visually, one way to think of a soundscape is as the way the listener's surroundings show themselves through sound. Terminology such as sound ecology, bioacoustics, electroacoustic music and musical composition of sound art is something that is still a novel concept in Malaysia. In Malaysia, the genre of soundscape composition is relatively new. This research is conducted and mainly inspired by the World Soundscape Project by R. Murray Schafer. The World Soundscape Project is to foster awareness of sounds and to promote the importance of soundscape and nature. Hence, this concept was applied in this research in text by conducting soundscape research in Bako National Park, Sarawak. The purpose of this research was to record the acoustic environment as a case study of soundscape composition which leads to composing a musical piece of sound..... 348 hits |
| 10 | 2015 Article | Identification of Tacca chantrieri (dioscoreaceae) through anatomical and morphological characters Mohd Noor Nor Nafizah, Wun Shun Jie, Mohamed Fatimah, Daud Norhayati, Alimon Hasimah, Anatomy and morphological characters were employed to identify four samples of Tacca sp. (Belimbing Tanah) from different localities in Perak. Anatomical characters including leaf epidermal characters, leaf venation, type of stomata and trichomes were investigated through transverse sections, epidermal peel and leaf clearing procedures. The outline and vascularization of the sections were also investigated. Result has shown that Tacca from four different localities in Perak were similar anatomically. However, morphologically these four species can be differentiated mostly based on their leaves, flowers and fruits. The leaf margins are slightly different of either entire or denticulate, and the colours of floral bracts are either purplish-black or purplish-black at the base gradually turns white to the apex. Eventhough they are slightly different morphologically, Tacca of Gunung Lang and Gunung Liang were suggested as T. chantrieri based on dichotomous key of Kalkman which emphasizes on..... 2895 hits |
