Bioactive chemical constituents of three crude extracts of Polyalthia Sclerophylla using GC-mass and phytochemical screening and their antibacterial and cytotoxicity activities
Ismail Zainol
The aim of the present study was to extract of Polyalthia sclerophylla leave (LPS) and identify its chemical constituents using Gas chromatography-Mass (GS-Mass) spectrometry and classical phytochemicals methods. This study included as well the evaluated of the bio-medical properties of LPS using antibacterial (against six bacteria species) and cytotoxicity (M-63 human cell line) activities. Three different solvent system i.e. methanol (MeOH), dichloromethane (DCM) and hexane were used to extract the LPS, three samples were obtained and labelled as MLPS, DLPS, and HLPS, respectively, and evaluated their biomedical activities. Phytochemical screening results showed to present glycosides and terpenoids in MLPS, DLPS, and HLPS, while alkaloids did not detect the presence in all extracts. GC-Mass results were detected to present 21 chemical compounds, the higher percentages were cyclobutanone, 2-methyl-2-oxiranyl-, 2-Undecanol and Pyridine, 2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-3-methyl-, while 1,6-Heptadien.....

Biogenic synthesis and characterization of AgNPs Using CEPS: cytotoxicity and antibacterial activites
Ismail Zainol
This study was amid to biogenic synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles (AgNPs) and evaluated its chemical-physical and biomedical properties. The currently used reducing agent is Polyalthia sclerophylla (CEPS). As a reducer, a crude extract of Polyalthia sclerophylla leaves (CEPS) was used, while silver nitrate (AgNO3) was used as an initiator. Two samples were prepared and named AgNPs-a and AgNPs-b, respectively. The prepared samples were carried out to characterize their biological, physical, and chemical properties. Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (EDX) and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy were the first techniques utilised to emphasise the formulation of AgNPs (Uv-vis). The morphology and size of the particles are determined using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). AgNPs were tested for cytotoxicity against Mg-63 human cells (a type of osteosarcoma cell and its osteoblast-like cells) using the Alamar blue assay, and their antibacter.....

Preparation and characterization of FsHA/FsCol beads: cell attachment and cytotoxicity studies
Ismail Zainol
The present study was conducted to prepare the fish scales' hydroxyapatite/collagen beads (FsHA/FsCol) and characterize their biological, physical, and chemical properties. A new method was used to prepare FsHA/FsCol composite beads by infiltrating the beads of FsHA in the solution of FsCol as a green method. X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analysis and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), used to evaluate the physical-chemical properties of the synthesized samples. Meanwhile, the cytotoxic and attachment studies of the FsHA/FsCol beads were used to investigate the biological features against the MG-63 human cell line. The results specified the efficiency of the new method, functional groups of FsCol were indicated to be present inside the beads of FsHA according to the XRD analysis which shows the functional peaks of FsCol. The SEM image were conformed successfully use starch as a porous a.....

The properties of poly(Latic Acid) (PLA)/Hydroxyapatite (FsHAp) composite prepared through solvent casting techniques
Ismail Zainol
In this study, the properties of composites produced using solvent casting technique from poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and fish scale hydroxyapatite (FsHA) were investigated. Some amount of FsHAp powders (from 10 to 70 wt%) were added to the PLA solution and stirred for eight hours after the PLA was dissolved in the dichloromethane (DCM) solvent. The homogeneous mixture of PLA and FsHA was poured into the metal mould and dried in the oven for 4 hours to produce a dried PLA/FsHA composite sheet. The PLA/FsHA composite sheet with different FsHA filler contents was successfully prepared. These composites were characterised by Fourier transform infared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), tensile tester and scanning electron microscope (SEM). It can be seen that by addition of 50 wt% FsHA filler contents gave the highest Youngs Modulus and tensile strength values of 2114.8 MPa and 23.3 MPa, respectively due to effective interaction between fillers and matrix. The meltin.....

The effect of Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) addition on the synthesis of? ETA-Tricalcium Phosphate (?-TCP) from biogenic hydroxyapatite
Ismail Zainol
The utilization of ?-tricalcium phosphate (?-TCP) in medical field has been on demand for their excellent biocompatibility, bioactivity and solubility properties. This material can be produced through degradation of hydroxyapatite (HA) at high temperature. In this research, biogenic hydroxyapatite from fish scales (FsHA) was selected as pre-cursor for the synthesis of ?-TCP. The effect of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) addition on degradation of FsHA into ?-TCP have been investigated. Different amount of YSZ ranging from 5 to 15 wt% were mixed with FsHA and ball milled into fine powder. The mixture was then sintered at temperature of 1200 C. The materials were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results from FTIR, XRD and SEM-EDX analyses proved that the presence of ?-TCP in the sintered sample at 1200oC. The percentage of ?-TCP was calculated ranging from 17 to 21 % as analyzed fro.....

Biomechanical properties and corrosion resistance of plasma-sprayed Fish Scale Hydroxyapatite (FsHA) and FsHA-Doped Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia Coatings on Ti–6Al–4V alloy for biomedical applications
Ismail Zainol
Hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings on metallic implants have been extensively used in orthopedic applications to improve tissue-implant interactions, enhance their biocompatibility, and enhance their functionality. However, the expensive synthetic HA is the most widely used bioceramic for implant coatings, leading to high implants costs. Hence, this research explored the potential of an inexpensive biogenic HA derived from fish scales and FsHA/yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) bioceramic coatings on a Ti6Al4V alloy as an alternative to synthetic HA coatings. The FsHA/YSZ powders and the coatings were examined with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray (SEM/EDX), and the surface roughness, microhardness, corrosion resistance, bioactivity, and in vitro cytotoxicity of the coatings were also determined. The morphological powder analysis revealed particles with a slightly irregular morphology and a fine spherical morphology, while the coating microstruct.....
