Dialogue journal writing via e-mail and its effects on ESL students writing skills

Abstract

This study aims to find out the effectiveness of dialogue journal writing via e-mail on students’ English writing development. The evaluation was done by looking at the writing qualities that include overall effectiveness, the development of topic selection, the ability to control the sentence structure and grammar and the use of vocabulary. This study was conducted for five weeks and a total of 60 e-mail dialogue journal entries were gathered. Besides that, a questionnaires session was conducted after the e-mail dialogue journal writing session. The findings revealed that dialogue journal writing via e-mail activity helps to develop students’ writing skills in relation to writing quality and quantity. The study also revealed that e-mail dialogue journal writing activity encourages students to write as they are free to choose their own topics. Abstract

Studies done in the area of composition support that free writing activities helped to develop confidence and efficiency among LI and L2 students. Dialogue-joumal writing is one of the activities in free writing that can provide opportunity to explore and experiment the language. The emerging of microcomputer technology has given endless and remarkable enhancement in language teaching instruction. Studies done by Lee (1998) and Warshauer (1995) indicate the usefulness of e-mail in teaching English where teachers and students can communicate with each other^through formal and informal consultation. Apart from that, e-mail can be used in exchanging dialogue journals and writing conference. The aim of this paper is to look at the effectiveness of dialogue journal writing through e-mail in enhancing communication among the matriculation studnets at the National University of Malaysia. Abstract

Kajian ini bertujuan mengkaji pengaruh sikap dan norma subjektif terhadap mahasiswa serta hubungan di antara pengaruh sikap dan norma subjektif terhadap mahasiswa UPSI yang mendorong mereka bermain aplikasi permainan dalam talian. Rekabentuk kajian ini adalah kaedah gabungan dengan mengaplikasikan kaedah tinjauan dan temu bual. Data dikumpulkan melalui soal selidik dan soalan temu bual melalui soalan terbuka menggunakan forum sebagai platform. Seramai 74 orang mahasiswa terlibat sebagai peserta kajian. Data soal selidik dianalisis secara analisis statistik deskriptif menggunakan perisian SPSS untuk mengenal pasti pengaruh sikap dan norma subjektif, manakala analisis kolerasi berganda untuk mengkaji hubungan di antara pengaruh sikap dan pengaruh norma subjektif. Pengaruh efikasi kendiri dan kepimpinan instruksional terhadap prestasi kerja guru besar

Abstract

Kajian ini bertujuan untuk mengenal pasti pengaruh efikasi kendiri dan kepimpinan instruksional terhadap prestasi kerja dalam kalangan guru besar. Kajian yang berbentuk kuantitatif deskriptif ini dilakukan secara tinjauan dengan menggunakan soal selidik yang diadaptasi daripada instrumen The Principal Sense of Efficacy Scale, Principal Instructional Management Rating Scale dan Personality Inventory. Seramai 178 orang guru besar telah dipilih secara rawak berstrata mengikut kadar dari sekolah rendah zon tengah Sarawak yang terdiri dari daerah Kanowit, Kapit, Song, Julau, Meradong, Sarikei, Sibu dan Selangau. Data dikumpul dan dianalisis menggunakan statistik deskriptif dan inferens. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahawa efikasi kendiri berada pada tahap tinggi (M=4.58, SD=0.29), kepimpinan instruksional (M=4.44, SD=0.32) dan prestasi kerja (M=4.45, SD=0.36). Perceived training needs of science teachers in fostering HOTS among lower secondary students in Peninsular Malaysia

Abstract

This study aims to determine the perceived training needs of lower secondary science teachers in Peninsular Malaysia, to enable them to foster Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) among students during science lessons. The study uses the cross-sectional survey design. Respondents were sampled using the multistage random sampling technique from a population of in-service lower secondary science teachers in Peninsular Malaysia, involving four states, 49 districts, and 158 schools. Self-completion of a questionnaire that was developed based on Borich Needs Assessment Model that is valid and reliable and mail back data collection method yielded a response rate of 65.3% (n=220).Qualitative data of teachers understanding about HOTS and ways to foster HOTS were analysed thematically while quantitative data of teachers’ perceived level of importance, confidence and actual practice for 33 ways of fostering HOTS items were determined using descriptive statistics such as frequency and Mean Weigh.....

The role of well-being, supervisor support and positive feedback on lecturers work engagement

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate job-related affective well-being, perceived supervisor support and positive feedback as contributing factors to work engagement of lecturers in the context two countries in the South East Asia. A total of 134 lecturers of one university in Malaysia and one university in Indonesia were recruited through simple random sampling. The research instruments were Job Affective Well-Being Scale, Survey of Perceived Supervisor Support and Utrecht Work Engagement Scale, while the statement of positive feedback was given in a hardcopy form or via personal e-mail. Multiple regression analysis showed that job affective well-being (? = 0.49, p = .01) and perceived supervisor support (? = 0.27, p = .01) made significant contribution to the prediction of work engagement. However, positive feedback statement (? = 0.02, p = .75) was not a significant predictor of work engagement. Kajian ini dijalankan untuk mengetahui elemen-elemen penting yang diperlukan pelajar bagi membantu proses pembelajaran. Data dikumpul melalui soal selidik dan dianalisis dengan menggunakan Statistical Package for The Social Science (SPSS). Nilai min digunakan untuk menentukan aras kepentingan setiap elemen yang dikaji. Kajian ini dijalankan ke atas 380 orang pelajar-pelajar ijazah sarjana muda di Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI). Sebanyak 47 elemen yang meliputi elemen-elemen keperluan kursus, komunikasi, penilaian dan capaian maklumat telah dikaj i untuk menentukan sejauh mana kepentingan elemen-elemen tersebut dalam portal pendidikan. Factors of internal audit effectiveness and moderating effect of management support in Malaysian public sector

Abstract

This study examines the direct relation effects of independent variables (internal auditor competence, internal auditor independence, and internal control system effectiveness) towards the dependent variable (internal audit effectiveness) in Malaysian public sector. Further, this research investigated the moderating effect of management support on the relationship between the independent variables and dependent variable. The theoretical framework is based on the Resource-Based Theory and Contingency Theory. Using the purposive sampling method, 206 internal auditors who work under Malaysian Federal Statutory Bodies (MFSB) were selected as the research subjects.
