Interactions between plant growth promoting microorganisms (pgpm) and biochar

Abstract

Rhizobia are frequently used in the agriculture sector to enhance legume growth and improve soil fertility. There is growing interest in utilizing biological nitrogen fixation as a means of increasing the potential for sustainable intensification of food production whilst simultaneously reducing environmental damage caused by overuse of chemical fertilisers. Biochar, a recalcitrant carbon-rich product of pyrolysis which may be added to soil as a fertilizer or as a soil improver, alters soil physico-chemical properties usually by acting as a liming agent, by increasing water holding capacity or by modifying cation exchange capacity. The effects of biochar on the soil microbial community are not fully understood. Therefore, the main aim of this investigation was to evaluate the effects of biochar on the Rhizobium-legume relationship and determine whether biochar could increase legume growth. Implementing inquiry based learning in Second Language Teacher Education (SLTE): a case study of student teachers experiences

Abstract

The aims of this study are to explore the learning experiences of student teachers (STs) in learning to teach and to examine how inquiry strategies help STs in learning. 32 STs in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) programme were selected as participants. A qualitative research design was utilized to analyse data from interview, observation and document analysis. Data were analysed using percentage, frequencies and analytical model by Powell et al. (2003). Inquiry-based learning (IBL) approach is chosen in this study due to the strong educational theoretical support and beneficial outcomes from research. The findings reveal strong influences of IBL in assisting STs in learning to teach especially in their pedagogical content knowledge courses. Segment reporting practices and determinants: evidence from Malaysian public listed companies

Abstract

This study aims to examine the extent and variety of operating segment disclosure among Malaysian public listed companies following the adoption of a new standard MFRS 8 Operating Segment. It further investigates the associations between firm characteristics (firm size, profitability and industrial membership) and the level of compliance to MFRS 8. Using content analysis on a final sample of 97 public listed firms on Bursa Malaysia, the results show that the average level of disclosure on operating segment is 73% and that the most reported items are both profit and loss, and external revenue at 8.56% respectively. Meanwhile, the highest segmental information disclosure variety is found to be 11 out of 16 items with only 20.62% firmsfound to comply with such disclosure variety. The results also indicate that industrial membership affects the level of segmental reporting compliance. Synergistic effects of biochar and peat moss on growth of choy sam (Brassica Rapa L.)

Abstract

An experiment was carried out to determine the synergistic effects of biochar and peat moss on growth and soil-plant interaction of choy sam. It was implemented at the Soil Science Laboratory, Sultan Idris Education University. The plants were treated with different amount of biochar (0g and 20g) and peat moss (0g and 20g). Parameters of the sample such as root and shoot length, plant biomass, soil pH and soil moisture content were analysed after 44 days of transplanting. Total of experimental units were 20 pots. The experimental design used in this experiment was Randomised Complete Block Design (RCBD). Data were analysed by using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) (SAS University Edition) and means were compared using Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) with significance level (P ). Abstract

A study was conducted to determine the effects of phosphate solubilizers and biochar on growth and yield of tomato plants. For this purpose, a 4×3 factorial experiment based on Completely Randomized Block Design (RCBD) with 4 replications were conducted in the growth room. In this factorial experiment, 4 levels of phosphate solubilizer bacteria (B1, B2, Bmix and Control) and 3 levels of biochar (Powder, Large Size, and Control) were applied on tomato plants to identify changes in growth parameters and yield. The aims of this study are to examine how the principles of IBL (Inquiry-based Learning) used in two pedagogical courses assist ESL (English as a Second Language) Student Teachers (STs) in learning to teach; explore how the IBL experiences assist the ESL STs in learning to teach and identify the essential elements required in developing the IBL framework for ESL STs. This case study makes use of purposive sampling of 23 STs from the eighth (8th) semester in the TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) programme in a public university as the participants. The application of Virtual Reality (VR) in the design process has gained growing attention as the technology accelerates the potential of designing spaces in the landscape architecture field, particularly for educational purposes. As VR can be described as a computer-generated environment that closely resembles reality, its application may expand the visual sense and comprehension in promoting natural interaction between humans and the environment. However, the potential and limitations of integrating VR applications in landscape architecture design are still being determined. A proper and effective implementation of formative assessment techniques in the classroom will help to improve students_ learning. Oral questioning, exercises, seatwork, quizzes, discussions, projects, assignments and homework are among the common formative assessment techniques applied by teachers during the T&L process. This paper reports the findings of a qualitative study undertaken to identify the formative assessment techniques used by geography teachers during the teaching and learning process. A case study design was used, and the study was conducted in one secondary school in Perak, Malaysia. Two Geography teachers participated in the study.
