| 7461 | 2019 Article | Process approach in teaching of esl writing: teachers assistance and its practicality in real classroom Ilyana Jalaluddin Writing in a first and second language are two different contexts and involve significant different composing process. In general, most ESL students have difficulties in the rhetorical and linguistics aspects of writing because of their prior education and education backgrounds (Mengjie Wei, 2017:16). Given the complexity of writing tasks, it is not surprising that L2 writers may experience various writing difficulties ranging from mechanical up to the content or idea development level. Although writing is teachable, the conversion of thought into written form is a difficult activity that requires organized pedagogical approaches and complementary skills. This is a case study which discusses the practices of process approach in teaching ESL writing and its practicality. The findings were based on a long-term observation and interview of three form 4 students and a teacher in Malaysia rural area school. Students’ writings were analysed to show the students’ development when activiti..... 697 hits |

| 7465 | 2019 Article | Exploring Filipino teachers professional workload Ancho, Inero Valbuena Teaching, which is often regarded as a noble profession, is not without sacrifices and time is among these sacrifices. Global data supports that teachers tend to work beyond the official working hours, more than any other professionals in the world. Similarly, teacher groups in the Philippines claim that the teacher workload is compromising the professionals’ wellbeing. The main purpose of this study is to explore how teachers get the work done, with emphasis on those professionals working in small barangay schools in the province. However, in spite of such issues, teachers were found to be matching such issues with strategizing, inspired work, and professional commitment. Finally, the paper concludes that while it is admirable how teachers match the struggles with positive attitude, it would still be ideal to explore means of ‘getting the work done’ without compromising the teachers’ physiological well-being, personal lives, and professional self-concept.

| 7467 | 2019 Article | Patronage and capitalism in the Musical associations of late nineteenth-century Colonial Manila Tan, Arwin Quinones The rapid economic growth in the colony beginning in the mid-nineteenth century gave rise to a modernity that transformed the musical mode of production in Manila. A new market comprised of the culturally-supportive elite and middle-class population patronised musical productions. In addition, musicians and other artists formed unions to create an institutionalised representation of themselves corresponding to the larger socio-political and economic forces in the network of production, creating new relations necessary in the existing social formation. Exchanges between the various players of the musical mode of production required matching forces to avoid exploitation, particularly of labour. This article examines three of the more prominent musical associations in the late nineteenth century—Liceo Artístico-Literario, Sociedad de Conciertos Unión Artístico-Musical, and Sociedad Musical Filipina de Santa Cecilia—investigating how they advanced music and education and promoted th..... 607 hits |
| 7468 | 2019 Article | A transmission of Kelentangan music among the Dayak Benuaq of East Kalimantan in Indonesia Eli Irawati Musical transmission is integral to the sustainability of musical traditions. Most literature on musical transmission focuses how songs are memorised rather than how instrumental pieces are transmitted. This study explores the transmission processes of the kêlèntangan, the instrumental pieces that accompany the Dayak Bênuaq rituals. The transmission processes comprise the conveyor, content and mechanism. There are three figures involved in this conveyor processes— the pênu’ung (musician), the pêngampir (observer) and pêmêliatn (shaman). I argue that transmission of kêlèntangan involves a triangular interaction among these three figures. In addition, the transmission of kêlèntangan generates two kinds of content—musical and non-musical, which requires different mechanisms. These mechanisms include bêkajiq (listening), kintau (imitating), to tameh (improvisation). The interaction between the pênu’ung transmits musical and non-musical contents; while the interaction b..... 898 hits |
