The use of jigsaw in primary science: what do year 5 children say on its influence on their attitudes towards science
Chan Wai Yin, Ong Eng Tek, Mohd Salleh Sabri,
This research was conducted to qualitatively gauge the influence of the use of Jigsaw in the teaching and learning of primary science on students’ attitudes towards science. A total of 12 Year-5 students (9 girls and 3 boys) in a low enrolment school or its Malay equivalent, Sekolah Kurang Murid (SKM) classified by the Ministry of Education as schools with less than 150 students were involved in this research. The two-week intervention consisted of three cycles of Jigsaw in the learning of primary science. Basically, one cycle of Jigsaw entails students working in their respective home groups, students moving to their respective expert groups to work on the teacher-prepared tasks, and students returning to their respective home groups to take turn to share what they have learned in their respective expert groups. Preand post-intervention interviews were conducted with six of the Year- 5 students. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed through a recursive process. While the anal.....

Number of familiarisation sessions required for an isokinetic knee strength assessment in female varsity athletes
Chan Jerusha Poe Yin, Yusof Ashril, Selvarajah Victor Selvanayagam,
Journal of Sports Science and Physical Education 5(2): 1-8, 2016 - The objective of this study was to determine the number of familiarisation sessions required for isokinetic knee extension and flexion in female varsity athletes. Thirty right footed dominance female varsity athletes (n=30; age: 21.73 ±0.22 years, body mass index (BMI): 22.58 ±0.52 kg/m2), with no history of knee injuries were recruited. The design started with either with the dominant or non-dominant limb, followed by the opposite limb. Four sets of isokinetic maximal voluntary contraction at 60 o/s were performed for each limb. The results showed that for knee extension regardless of which limb starts first is 2 sessions, however for knee flexion, 3 sessions is required for dominant limb while 2 for non-dominant. In addition, the presence of cross-education effect is observed for knee flexion from non-dominant to dominant limb, where the number of session was reduced from three to two. In conclusion, we propose that.....

P. Ramlees music : an expression of local identity in Malaya during the mid-twentieth century
Chan Clare, Suet Ching,
Tan Sri P. Ramlee’s (1929-1973) music dominated the popular music scene in Malaya (prior to 1957 when Malaysia became independent) during the mid-twentieth century. The local communities during his time were captivated by his velvety crooning voice and musical style. P. Ramlee’s music featured strong influences from Western tonality, yet exuded the musical aesthetics of the cultures inherent in Malaya. His music was influenced by the demands and aesthetics of urban entertainment, the rich multi-cultural society and the socio-political atmosphere. Many of P. Ramlee’s songs were influenced by the background of its directors who suited his songs to the themes and storyline of their films. The interplay between these various power structures were important in shaping P. Ramlee’s music. In this article, I argue that although P. Ramlee’s music mainly utilised Western musical instruments, tonality, and harmonies, his music was also localised to the flavour of the Malay, Chinese, Ind.....

Heterogeneity in the musical acquisition of Orang Asli children from the Mah Meri and Semai groups
Chan Clare Suet Ching,
The music acquisition and aesthetics of children in two Orang Asli villages, the Mah Meri of Kampung Sungai Bumbun, Carey Island, Selangor; and the Semai of Kampung Ulu Geroh, Gopeng has shifted from an oral tradition transmitted from ancestral lineages to institutionalized learning acquired from a teacher outside the Orang Asli cultural traditon. The interaction of Orang Asli children with friends from multicultural backgrounds, exposure to the mass media, and the evangelization of religious groups has also increasing dislocated Orang Asli children's music from a place-based and ethnic heritage to one "deterritorialized" space and time. These phenomena emerged due to the nation's hegemonic policies of assimilation, development and globalization since Independence in 1957. This article discusses the variable that influence and determine the music acquisition of Mah Meri and Semai children today. These variables include; issues of identity, worldviews and religion, tourism, locality, th.....

Song text composition in Pinloin among the indigenous Jahai of Peninsular Malaysia : a local postmodernist approach?
Chan Clare Suet Ching,
The Jahai are one among 18 indigenous Orang Asli groups in peninsular Malaysia. They perform the traditional pinloin, a song and dance genre, during the pano ceremony (séances) and tree and fertility rituals. The song text and music of pinloin is taught to the Jahai halaq (shaman) by their chenoi (spirit guide) through dreams. Pinloin song text manifests the flora and fauna of the rainforest of Malaysia as depicted by the chenoi. Today (2016), the function of pinloin as a ritual enactment has shifted to a form of entertainment or cultural experience for tourists, visitors and visiting dignitaries. This change has resulted in a disruption in the transmission of the traditional pinloin song text. In this article, I argue that there is an increase in the use of the pastiche approach such as random sharing of fragments of song text, sporadic unfolding of narratives and little connection between the title and song text in pinloin song text compositions due to the influence of the ‘touris.....

Etching time effect on photoluminescence, porosity, surface morphology and conductivity of porous silicon
Chan Kok Sheng, Wan Mohamed Zin Wan M. Khairul, Tham, Dwight, Jern Ee, Mohamad Isa Mohd Ikmar Nizam, Hassan Mohd Faiz,
Recently, porous silicon (PS) gains a lot of research interest with its potential applications in optoelectronics, flat panel displays technology, and chemical sensor. In this work, PS was chemically etched on p-type silicon (Si) wafer by hydrofluoric acid (HF) with 40% nitric acid (HNO3) concentration at different etching time. The PS has porosity dependent on etching time in the range (38-60) % that gives orange-red photoluminescence (PL) between 657 nm to 661 nm. The PL intensity increases and the peak wavelength shows slight blue shift as etching time increases. The energy gap obtained are higher than pure Si (1.11eV). Meanwhile, the conductivity of the PS decreases as the porosity and energy gap increase...

An evaluation of the implementation of Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Program in Malaysian secondary schools
Chan, Siang Jack
This study aims to evaluate the implementation of Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Program in Malaysian secondary schools. The evaluation of the program is crucial to investigate the effectiveness of the implemented ETA Program in motivating and enhancing the students‟ interest to use English language (EL). This study employed both quantitative methods and qualitative methods in data collection, which involved a total of nine rural secondary schools in seven states around Malaysia. This study involved a total of 59 EL teachers and 399 students. Based on the findings gathered, there were discrepancies in the actual implementation as compared to the intended objectives of the ETA Program. A few of the intended objectives of the ETA Program were not achieved due to improper execution of the program in the schools. The written and oral test results showed discrepancies between students from the co-teaching classes and the students from the non-co- teaching classes. However, the.....
