1 | 2009 thesis | Understanding content and language integrated learning (CLIL) in selected Malaysia Biology classrooms: a case study Lai, Ying Ying The purpose of this qualitative case study was to understand and describe the existing teaching and learning activities of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) conducted in the selected Biology classrooms in Peninsular Malaysia. The study was guided by three research questions, focusing in the nature of the teaching and learning activities, the cognitive levels reflected by the activities through the lens of Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy (RBT), and the language skills that could be learned through the activities in Biology learning. Three experienced Biology Excellent Teachers and their students were purposively selected as respondents in this study. The data collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document reviews were validated through member checking and triangulation. Krishnapillai Gengeswari, Kwok See Ying, Cheong Pinky, Li Xin, Cheong Ka Kit, Lee Ying, There has been an increase in the students’ enrolment to the private schools across Malaysia. The shift in the parents’ preference on the selection of secondary school has been predominantly attributed to the dissatisfaction with the current school education system. Subsequently, this study attempts to study the factors that affect parents’ preferences in selecting the secondary school for their children. Four factors namely school characteristics, school environment, social influences and the parents-administration-teachers (PAT) relationship that are related to school choice were examined in this study. 203 representative elements were drawn using judgmental sampling technique and structural equation modelling (SEM) analysis was used to analyse the data collected. 4 | 2018 article | Exploring discourse patterns in literature circles Ho, Lai Ying This study explores the discourse patterns produced by a group of ESL students and the roles played by the group discussion leaders in literature circles that effectively enhance their comprehension of the stories in graphic and non-graphic novels. Six ESL students were selected in this study and seven literature circles were conducted to gather data to address the research questions. Data were gathered from direct observation, interviews and transcripts of literature circles. The data obtained from the transcripts of literature circles showed that the students used different comprehension strategies during discussions such as questioning, evaluating, using prior knowledge, interpreting and summarising that effectively enhance their understanding of the texts. Turn-taking in discussions also showed that students with better language proficiency in English language dominated the discussions and could comprehend the stories more effectively. 5 | 2018 article | The effectiveness of literature circles on ESL students comprehension of a graphic novel Ho, Lai Ying This study explores the effectiveness of implementing literature circles to assist a group of ESL students to comprehend a graphic novel. Data were gathered from direct observation, interviews and transcripts of literature circles. The data obtained from the direct observation showed that the students participated actively in literature circles to comprehend the graphic novel. Besides, the data gathered from the transcripts of literature circles revealed that the students connected their responses with their personal values and experiences. Data collected from the transcripts of literature circles showed that the students made interpretations when they discussed the illustrations in the graphic novel. To gather data on the students’ perceptions of literature circles, evidence from the interviews showed that literature circles enhanced the students’ interaction, motivation and responsibility. 8 | 2019 thesis | Literature circles and comprehension of graphic and non-graphic novels Ho, Lai Ying This study investigates the effectiveness of literature circles in assisting English as a
second language (ESL) students to develop comprehension of the story in a graphic
novel compared to a non-graphic novel. It also aims to examine the effectiveness of
using role sheets in literature circles and identify the comprehension strategies
produced by the students that effectively develop their comprehension of the texts.
The conceptual framework of this study was based on constructivism. Case study
method was employed and data were gathered from direct observations and
interviews regarding the students’ participation in literature circles. The participants in
this study were six form four students. The findings of this study showed that the
students comprehended the graphic and non-graphic novels differently in literature
circles and they implemented comprehension strategies to comprehend the texts. In

teacher in teaching Chinese as a second language (TCSL) in Malaysia. With
the library research adopted in this study, a documentary study was applied, the
curriculum structures of two TCSL programs namely the Bachelor Degree in
Education (Chinese Language Education for Primary School-PISMP-SK) offered by
IPGM (Institute of Teacher Education Malaysia) and Bachelor Degree in Teaching
Chinese as a Second Language (TCSLB) which is offered in Beijing Foreign Studies
University, China (BFSU) were obtained officially. The structures of these curriculum
and their contents are examined, compared and analyzed. The results show that gaps
