The effectiveness of hands-on modules in learning science: A case Study in Malaysia
Mohamed Nor Azhari Azman
The main aim of this study is to examine the effectiveness of two novel learning modules, namely the Arts & Stability Card and Magnobolt modules, on the understanding of relevant concepts of stability and electromagnetism, respectively, among Malaysian secondary school students. The modules were developed based on the Malaysian Secondary School curriculum for science subjects that promote hands-on activities in the classrooms. A quasiexperimental method was used that involved two control and two experimental groups. Students in experimental groups used the novel learning modules, whereas those in the control group used the conventional learning materials. For the evaluation of the Arts & Stability Cards module, forty-eight and fifty students were assigned to the control and experimental groups, respectively. For the evaluation of the Magnobolt module, seventy-nine and seventy-eight students were assigned to the control and experimental groups, respectively. A series of t-tests were per.....

The development and evaluation of the qualities of thinking skills module
Tee Tze Kiong, Azhari Azman Mohamed Nor, Md Yunos Jailani, Yee Mei Heong, Mohamad Mimi Mohaffyza, Mohamad Baharom, Othman Widad,
Using self-instructional modules could be an alternative approach and make significant contributions to teaching and learning. Module is a planned series of learning activities designed carefully to assist the learners to accomplish certain specific objectives based on individual differences, interest and capability on learning. An attempt to develop and implement a modular approach on teaching thinking skills was made in the secondary school. This paper will discuss various components of this modular approach by referring to Meyer Model. Fleiss’s Kappa was used to determine the degree to which consensus agreement ratings vary from the rate expected by chance, with values greater than .60 Indicating substantial non-chance agreement. Fleiss’s Kappa for the inter-rater reliability score was κ = .6357, S.E. = .0990, 95% C.I. = .4416 to .8298, which can be taken to represent constant agreement among three raters for the instrument “Rating scale for the qualities of a module”. The .....

Kajian terhadap penggunaan IBS dalam projek swasta di kawasan Lembah Klang
Mohd Nawi Mohd Nasrun, Azhari Azman Mohamed Nor, Mohamad Kamar Kamarul Anuar, Abd Hamid Zuhairi,
The construction sector based on industry or Industrialised Building System is a method of construction using the industrialised building materials at the manufacturing plant. This method can replace the conventional method which is able to reduces the amount of foreign labor as well as to improve the quality of construction, lower cost and reduction in construction time. This study is intended to create a guideline that can be used to encourage all private construction projects in the Klang Valley implement the IBS System in 2015. Therefore, this study was undertaken to assess the level of IBS usage in the building construction. There are about 400 private sector projects in the Klang Valley has been identified as a sample for this study in which 184 private projects are using IBS technology achieved a score of 55% and above. The findings of this study had identify the perceptions, barriers exist and the measures to be taken in the implementation and the criteria for developing a busi.....

IBS survey 2010 drivers, barriers and critical success factors in adopting Industrialised Building System (IBS) construction by G7 contractors in Malaysia
Mohamad Kamar Kamarul Anuar, Azman Mohamed Nor Azhari, Mohd Nawi Mohd Nasrun,
The industrialised building system (IBS) survey has become an essential tool for ensuring the IBS Roadmap (2003 to 2010) meets its goals and target. As part of the process review survey, it also records the trend achievement of Malaysia in the usage of IBS in the building construction industry. The first and second IBS surveys were published in 2003 and 2005, respectively. Afterward, the IBS Roadmap’s midterm review was conducted. The third and the most recent IBS surveys were conducted in 2008 and 2010, respectively. This paper aims to highlight a part of the IBS survey report in 2010, which has been conducted to measure the drivers, barriers and the critical success factors of G7 contractors in adopting IBS construction. G7 is a Construction Industry Development Board contractor grade that can apply tender without limit. The importance of this paper is that it guides the policy and implementation strategy of IBS by G7 contractors. The survey shows that the acceptance, adoption, and.....

Fragmentation issue in Malaysian Industrialised Building System (IBS) projects
Mohd Nawi Mohd Nasrun, Lee Angela, Azman Mohamed Nor Azhari, Mohamad Kamar Kamarul Anuar,
As a developing country, Malaysian is currently driving for implementing a new or modern construction method, the Industrialised Building System (IBS), as an alternative towards enhancing construction performance. Currently, most of the IBS project developments in Malaysia are still conducted by using the traditional construction process approach. This traditional construction process has been widely criticised for its fragmented approach to project delivery and its failure to form effective teams thus created a number of issues such as reworks, time delay, rising costs, lack of communication and coordination, and wastages. This paper through literature review aims to highlight this fragmentation issue and clarify how far it affects the process of IBS implementation. Suggestions on how an integrated approach in design and construction in order to minimise the fragmentation gaps will be concluded...

Exploring the problems faced by technical school students in learning engineering courses
Mustapha Ramlee, Abdul Rahim Zaharatul Laili, Azhari Azman Mohamed Nor,
The teaching of engineering courses is relatively challenging due to the nature of the courses that are perceived as “difficult courses” by a number of students. Thus, the purpose of this action research was to explore the problems faced by electrical and electronic engineering (PKEE) students studying a difficult topic–transistor. This research was also aimed at identifying the students’ attitude towards Problem-based Learning (PBL). Literature has shown that PBL could enhance students’ understanding and make the learning more meaningful. The theoretical framework of this study was based on Kemmis and Mc Taggart model. Cooperative learning method was also utilised in this study consisted of Jigsaw technique in the first and second rounds of the study. In the final round, the discussion method was used. In an action research design, a classroom is a usual research site. Thus, an engineering class of 30 Form 5 students in a Technical School was selected. The PBL method was app.....

Incorporating spatial selection criteria with decision preferences in MCE-GIS-based site selection of a precast manufacturing plant
Mohamed Nor Azhari Azman
The Construction Industry Development Board of Malaysia has been actively promoting the use of precast manufacturing in the local construction industry over the last decade. In an era of rapid technological changes, precast manufacturing significantly contributes to improving construction activities and ensuring sustainable economic growth. Current studies on the location decision of precast manufacturing plants aimed to enhanced local economic development are scarce. To address this gap, the present research establishes a new set of spatial criteria, such as attribute maps and preference weights, derived from a survey of local industry decision makers. These data represent the input parameters for the MCE-GIS site selection model, for which the weighted linear combination method is used. Verification tests on the model were conducted to determine the potential precast manufacturing sites in the state of Penang, Malaysia. The tests yield a predicted area of 12.87 acres located within a.....
