Fostering augmented information: analyzing assisted living experience in Malaysia

Abstract

Like other developing countries, Malaysia also will facing with aging phenomenon. Malaysian Government already started to rise up the issues of elderly people problem since 1995. The formulation of the National Policy for the Elderly in 1995 and the setting up of the National Elderly Health Council in 1997 confirm that the government is serious in its commitment to provide care and services for the nation’s elderly. A comprehensive health care system has been applied through extensive care for elderly with chronic diseases. The health care system has been developed to focus on short term care and short term hospitalization with the consequence that the services available may not be effective in dealing with elderly having chronic diseases and disabilities. A research has recognized a moment of truth from the older system. Abstract

The creativity of earlier artists and sculptors in designing geometric are extraordinary provided with only a compass. Indeed, geometric in Islamic art and design are unique and have their own aesthetic values. In order to further understand geometric, self-learning with the approach of hands-on would be appropriate. For this study, Islamic themed geometrics designed and created, concerning only; i). The Square Repetition Unit and √2, ii). The Hexagonal Repetition Unit and √3 and iii) Double Hexagon. The aim of this research is to evaluate the creativity of Islamic geometric patterns artworks, through Fundamental Arts and Gestalt theory. Rang Undang-Undang Pendidikan 1995 yang menekankan Sistem Pendidikan Kebangsaan bertaraf dunia telah menegaskan pentingnya ‘mengembangkan dan meningkatkan lagi daya intelek serta pemikiran yang rasional, kreatif dan kritis’ di kalangan pelajar-pelajar (Kementerian Pendidikan 1995). Falsafah Pendidikan Negara dijadikan landasan kepada dasar pendidikan kebangsaan. Perkembangan daya intelek individu diberikan penekanan utama dalam Falsafah Pendidikan Negara (FPN) bersama-sama dengan perkembangan rohani, jasmani dan emosi. Relationship between cognitive style and reading ability among primary school students

Abstract

The main aims of the study was to identify the students’ cognitive style. Secondly, to find the relationship between students’ cognitive style and their reading ability in Malay Language. Sample of the study consisted of 130 students (65boys, 65 girls) from selected primary schools in Malaysia. The participants were selected from standard 4 and 5 (10-11years old). Methodology of study was survey using questionnaire to collect data. In data collection, three instruments were used namely revised ‘Group Embedded Figures Tests’ (GEFT), demographic questionnaire and reading test. From data collected, researcher were able to identify student's cognitive style either 'Field Independent' (FI) or 'Field Dependent'(FD). Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Finding of the study showed that there were more participants with Field Independent cognitive style (97 students) than Field dependent (33 students). Lignans and polyphenols of Phyllanthus amarus schumach and thonn induce apoptosis in HCT116 human colon cancer cells through caspases-dependent pathway

Abstract

Background: The anticancer effects of Phyllanthus amarus extract on various cancer cells have been investigated, however, the effects of its major constituents on HCT116 human colorectal cancer cells have not been reported. Objective: In the present study, we investigated the cytotoxic effect of 80% ethanol extract of P. amarus and its marker constituents (phyllanthin, hypophyllanthin, gallic acid, niranthin, greraniin, phyltetralin, isolintetralin, corilagin and ellagic acid) on HCT116 and their underlying mechanisms of action. Methods: Their antiproliferative and apoptotic effects on HCT 116 were performed using MTT assay and flow cytometric analysis, respectively, while caspases 3/7, 8 and 9 activities were examined using the colorimetric method. The expression of cleaved poly ADP ribose polymerase enzyme (PARP) and cytochrome c proteins was investigated by the immune-blot technique. Morpkological observation and molecular characterization on fruit development stages of selected Malaysian Durian varieties

Abstract

This study aimed to characterise D24, D99, D160, D168, D197 and D200 varieties at matured, riped, and dehisced stages through morphological observation and molecular characterisation using transcriptomic analysis. Twenty-eight morphological traits were evaluated according to durian descriptor _National Guidelines for The Conduct of Tests for Distinctness, Uniformity and Stability_. Separately, a total of 21 durian samples were submitted to transcriptome analysis to access biosynthesis pathways during fruit developmental stages. The results of the study showed that these six Malaysian durian varieties demonstrated a considerable level of morphological variation. Statistical ANOVA and canonical discriminant analysis identified pedicel length trait as the most significant quantitative trait to differentiate the six varieties. Qualitative traits dendrogram clustered the varieties into two main clades includes Clade A (mostly of D160, D168, D197 and D200) and Clade B (mostly of D24 and D99).....

Analyzing co-creation in service innovation: assisted living experience in Malaysia

This paper examines a perceived benefit of assisted living experience at Rumah Kebajikan Cheras Baru, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The examination focused on co-creational value and perceived benefit towards elderly system, which service design methodology have been implied to discover a results and feedback from activities that has been applied in old system of managing assisted homes and old folks homes in Malaysia. Existing health care system services available may not be effective in dealing with elderly having chronic diseases and disabilities. Resulted of analyzing have shown that elderly people in Malaysia dependent too much on their family support and government support. This paper examines the previous system of homes nursing and assisted living experience and provides a better system that can really support elderly people sustain and manage their daily life effectively without a provision from the government or private sector nursing. Analisis struktur populasi tikus sawah (Rattus Argentiventer) di kawasan sawah padi, Pinang tunggal,Pulau Pinang

Abstract

Kajian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis struktur populasi Rattus argentiventer di kawasan sawah padi, Pinang Tunggal, Pulau Pinang. Pemerangkapan dijalankan pada dua sesi berbeza. SPB telah dibangunkan dengan membina pagar plastik di sekeliling kawasan kajian dan lubang-lubang kecil telah dibuat sebagai laluan pintu masuk bagi Rattus argentiventer. Kaedah penyingkiran telah digunakan untuk menganggar saiz populasi. Struktur populasi telah ditentukan dengan mengukur, menimbang, menentukan jantina dan memeriksa kondisi badan Rattus argentiventer. Morfometri tengkorak telah dilaksanakan dengan mengukur parameter tengkorak manakala pengamplifikasian dan penjujukan DNA mitokondria Rantau Hipervariabel 1 telah dijalankan untuk menentukan bilangan haplotip. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahawa jumlah keseluruhan tikus yang diperangkap semasa sesi pemerangkapan adalah 110.
