Identifying relationship involving learning styles and problem solving skills among vocational students

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between students’ learning styles and problem solving skills among students in Building Construction Course at Vocational School. This study also investigated the differences between the students’ type of learning styles and their ability to solve the problem using their creative thinking. A survey was carried out on 68 vocational students in Building Construction Course from two Vocational Schools. Felder-Soloman’s Index of Learning Styles (ILS) and elements of creative thinking in problem solving for Vocational Education were the tools used in this study. Creative thinking in problem solving elements was categorized from the subject specification used in Building Construction curriculum. In brief, the ILS have five dimension; Processing, Perception, Input, Understanding and Perception. Abstract

Makalah ini melihat keampuhan Teori Falsafah Bahasa sebagai wahana penyampai nilai dan ilmu. Teori ini menekankan tiga prinsip asas, iaitu berbahasa dengan menggunakan nahu yang betul mengikut konteks, berbahasa untuk menyampaikan maklumat yang benar, dan berbahasa sebagai suatu ibadah. Rata-rata masyarakat di Malaysia terutama golongan belia amat menggemari genre novel sebagai bahan bacaan. Kehidupan beragama juga menjadi pilihan majoriti masyarakat Malaysia termasuk golongan belia. Novel yang dipilih ialah ‘Seteguh Karang’ yang dipelajari di sekolah menengah telah memperlihatkan prinsip-prinsip dalam teori ini diamalkan. Di samping itu, novel ini juga telah membuktikan wujudnya nilai modal insan yang mampu menjadi penjana dan penghubung transformasi identiti belia di Malaysia. Abstract

Makalah ini membincangkan usaha memartabatkan bahasa Melayu melalui pendidikan. Tujuan utama ke arah ini adalah kerana bahasa Melayu merupakan bahasa kebangsaan yang menjadi alat perpaduan, bahasa perhubungan utama dan bahasa ilmu ke arah membina negara bangsa untuk mencapai hasrat 1Malaysia. Keyakinan ini telah termeterai bahawa bahasa Melayu telah menduduki tempat yang tinggi sebagai bahasa moden kerana telah memenuhi semua syarat seperti sebagai bahasa kebangsaan, bahasa rasmi, bahasa pengantar pendidikan, bahasa perdagangan, bahasa agama, bahasa kebudayaan dan kesusasteraan, bahasa militer, bahasa lingua franca, bahasa parlimen dan bahasa mahkamah. Mengikut kajian pada tahun 1992, bahasa Melayu menduduki tempat keenam, iaitu mempunyai kira-kira 200 juta penutur. Abstract

Rapid changes are taking place in industry, the labor market, work to work organization. The changes of taking places in industry have an important implication for Vocational Education and Training (VET). These widespread changes have significant implications for the learning requirement of workers and for the pedagogical methods to facilitate that learning. This paper focuses in the learning of instructor, learners in the perspective of their readiness with teaching and learning challenge in VET. Preliminary toxicity test and phytochemical screening of Sargassum polycystum crude extracts from marine macroalgae

Abstract

Sargassum polycystum is a species of brown algae (Phaeophyta). Some recent studies have found many uses of this algae, one of them is for medicine. In this study, crude hexane, dichloromethane and methanol extracts of Sargassum polycystum were tested for toxicity activity and screened for its principal chemical substances. The toxicity test was done using Brine Shrimp Lethality (BSL) test against Artemia salina Leach. The results of this study showed the LC50 value of methanol extract was 295.12 mgml-1, while both hexane and dichloromethane extracts were 275.42 mgml-1. The BSL test exhibited no significant toxicity against A.salina. Phytochemical screening shows S. polycystum contained non polar and polar components. As the conclusion, S. polycystum contained secondary metabolites that are not toxic to A. salina and they are not a potential source for toxicity...

Learners brain Electroencephalogram subbands for Kolbs learning style classification

Abstract

Learning has been connected specifically to a human brain whereby brain's capacities such as thinking, short and long term memory are considered among the most critical modalities of learners. On the other hand, Learning Style (LS) had been widely accepted in education domain with the emergence of several LS models. Nevertheless, the models used only questionnaire-based Learning Style Inventory (LSI) in the LS determination process which exposed to inaccuracy. As such, this research proposes a new method whereby Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals are used hand-in-hand with the traditional LSI for Kolb's LS classification establishment The research also aimed to determine the EEG sub-bands that could best classify the Kolb's LS and outline their characteristics.
