Categorizing polytechnic engineering learning activities based on students learning style
Ismail Irwan Mahazir, Abdul Rahim Azwin Arif, Mohd Nordin Norazah, Che Ros Ridzwan, Din Rosseni,
Learning style is expressed as the way a learner approaches a process of learning and how he accrues the content of learning. This normally involves interactions between teachers, students and teaching materials. Knowing appropriate students’ learning style can improve students’ performance and increase student involvement in teaching and learning. A case study was conducted involving 30 first year students from the Department of Mechanical Engineering in an AutoCAD course at Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Polytechnic (POLIMAS), Kedah. An analysis was conducted on a set of questionnaire to obtain the mean value, standard deviation and percentages. Based on Honey and Mumford’s model, the findings revealed that the students’ learning style was inclined towards activist and pragmatist typology. This study provides information necessary to help in the process of deciding the suitable learning strategy to be applied to students at the polytechnic. In general, these findings help.....

Climate change and hydrometeorological influence on water resources a study on 2014 water rationing in Selangor, Malaysia
Ithnin Hamirdin, Baharom Azmi Ahmad,
Climate change has been held responsible for a number of environmental changes currently taking place in the world. Water resource is one of the aspects of the environment that are showing signs of the detrimental effects of climate change. In Malaysia, water resource is always viewed as something which can be obtained easily. The aim of the study was to examine the water crisis in the state of Selangor in February and March 2014. The methodology employed was participant-c bservation technique and secondary data analysis. The finding was that In February and March 2014, many parts of Peninsular Malaysia experienced hot and dry weather. The state of Selangor bore the hardest brunt of this dry spell. The extended period of this dry spell caused lowering of water levels in most rivers resulting in the dipping of dam levels. Since the water supply system of the state depends wholly on surface water, the decrease in dam levels resulted in decreased volume of raw water that could be treated .....

Conceptions of learning through learning styles and cognitive dimension in vocational education
Mohamad Mimi Mohaffyza, Yee Mei Heong,
Individual learning preferences and learning styles have been defined in several different ways according to theoretical models. In the context of vocational education, students have different characteristics compared to their counterparts in other fields of education, since learning orientation is more on job focused. However, the cognitive dimension is still need to be measured especially for learners at school level. This article addresses the relationship between learning styles and cognitive dimension in vocational education at secondary school level. Based on the Felder-Silverman Learning Styles and Cognitive Dimension Model, the authors highlighted students’ dimension of learning styles, students’ preferences on learning preference, and the conceptual of knowledge, skills and problem solving construct according to taxonomy. It is concluded that the vocational students are more incline to be visual learner. This learning preference and learning styles will contribute to their.....

Curriculum framework for preparing quality teachers for the future: developing guiding principles
Ratnavadivel Nagendralingan, Chang Lee Hoon, Salih Maria, Low Jeffery, Karuppiah Nagalingam, Omar Ainon, Md. Yassin Sopia, Dawi Amir Hasan, Saad Noor
Globalization is constantly impacting on education and is radically transforming it in terms of the mode and culture of learning. The shift from product-economy to knowledge-economy has profound implications for the kind of education a nation has to offer its future generation. The need for knowledge workers places emphasis on new attributes for learners, particularly those which pertain to twenty-first century skills. The last decade and a half has also seen the emergence of international student ranking lists such as TIMSS, PISA, PIRLS, Olympiads, which have put tremendous pressure on education ministries. A response to this pressure of „rank and shame‟ has been a flurry of education reform initiatives, including in Malaysia. The ability to develop learners who can think critically and creatively and to reason logically and to innovate is the challenge in education. The Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025 has identified teacher education among the eleven shifts to transform th.....

Developmental practice activities of elite youth swimmers
Tan Angelina Li San, Low Jeffrey Fook Lee,
The purpose of the study was to examine the developmental pathways of elite youth swimmers. Swim-related developmental activities of elite and sub-elite youth swimmers were examined. Fifteen elite (8 males; 7 females) and 15 subelite (5 males; 10 females) youth swimmers were recruited for the study. A semistructured questionnaire was used to record retrospectively the hours engaged in swim-related activities (i.e., structured and unstructured activities) from beginning of career. No significant differences were found for swim-related developmental milestones for both elite and sub-elite swimmers. Overall, the elite swimmers accumulated more hours in swim-related activities than the sub-elites between 6-15 years of age. Although the former accumulated more hours in both structured and unstructured swimming activities between 6-12 years of age, no significant differences were found between the groups. However, the elite swimmers accumulated significantly more hours in structured swimming.....

Discerning beginning teachers conceptions of competence through a phenomenographic investigation
Swee Pauline Choo Goh, Kung Teck Wong,
The research reported here investigates variation in beginning teachers‟ early experiences of their own teaching competency. A phenomenographic research approach was used to show the qualitatively different ways teacher competence was understood amongst beginning teachers in Malaysia. Phenomenographic interviews were conducted with 18 beginning teachers who had started full time teaching for between 1-3 years. Analysis revealed that beginning teachers „saw‟, „understood‟ the conceptions of competency in five different ways: i) the ability to manage classroom and student behavior, ii) a strong knowledge of the subject content, iii) the ability to reach out for assistance and support, iv) understanding the students they teach, and v) possessing values of professionalism. The relationships between these different ways are represented diagrammatically. This investigation gives an insider‟s perspective a strong voice of what constitutes teacher competence, as well as illustrates.....

Effectiveness of a visual-spatial intelligence teaching courseware on the achievement of underachieving students in equivalent fractions
Yusof Yuhaida, Ibrahim Mohamad,
This research was conducted to test the effectiveness of visual-spatial intelligence teaching courseware to teach “equivalent fraction” topic for Form 1 underachieving students. This courseware uses visual-spatial intelligence which is one of the eight multiple intelligences in multiple intelligence theory by Howard Gardner. The design of this research was pretested and posttested on nonequivalent groups design. The sample involved 57 students that comprised 29 for the treatment group and 28 for the control group. This research also tested whether the use of the courseware could increase visual-spatial intelligence in the Multiple Intelligence (MI) test. Students’ perspective towards the courseware in terms of courseware objectives, courseware content, interface design, motivation, and assistance in learning the topic was acquired using questionnaire. ANCOVA test showed that there was a significant effect of the visual-spatial teaching courseware on learning performance compared .....

Efficacy and sublethal effects of imidacloprid on the survival and fecundity of Aulacophora Foveicollis (lucas) (Coleoptera Chrysomelidae)
Ibrahim Yusof, Rezali Izyan Nadirah,
The lethal and sublethal effects of imidacloprid were determined against the red pumpkin beetle, Aulacophora foveicollis (Lucas) (Coleopterea: Chrysomelidae). In a bioassay experiment, six varying concentrations of imidacloprid and a control were applied to the adults. The median lethal concentration (LC50) was determined to be 0.005 mg a.i. L-1. Assuming at this level of concentration to be sublethal, i.e. LC50 value, imidacloprid was found to significantly exert harmful sublethal effects on the beetle’s survival and fecundity. Compared to the control, imidacloprid reduced the longevity of the treated beetle by 29 days and the fecundity to zero. This study showed that imidacloprid was ovicidal against A. foveicollis and might not induce physiological resurgence or resistance in the red pumpkin beetle...
