Extraction and isolation of alkaloids from the leaves of Alseodaphne corneri Kosterm
Nafiah Mohd Azlan, Khoo Jennie,Hui Chen, Mohammad Siti Nor Fadzilah, Awang Khalijah, A. Hadi A. Hamid, Ahmad Kartini,
The isolation and purification of the leaves extract of Alseodaphne corneri Kosterm yielded four alkaloids; norisocorydine 1, isocorydine 2, 2-norobamegine 3 and obamegine 4. This phytochemical study involves extraction, separation by using various chromatographic methods and structural determination by spectroscopic technique such as ultraviolet spectroscopy (UV), infrared spectroscopy (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) including 1D-NMR (1H, 13C and DEPT), 2D-NMR (COSY, NOESY, HMQC/HSQC, and HMBC) and mass spectrometry (MS). The IC50 value of antiplasmodial activity for isocorydine 2 and obamegine 4 are 0.50 μmolL-1 and 0.14 μmolL-1 respectively...

Hernagine type of Aporphine Alkaloids from Alseodaphne perakensis
Md Nazimuddin Mahfuzah, Husna Hasnan Muhammad Hafiz, Ahmad Kartini, Awang Khalijah, Nafiah Mohd Azlan,
A phytochemical study of the stem bark of Alseodaphne perakensis (Lauraceae) had been carried out. The dichloromethane crude extract from stem bark of Alseodaphne perakensis (Lauraceae) yielded two hernagine type of aporphine alkaloids namely oxohernagine and N-methylhernagine. The isolation and purification of these alkaloids were achieved using Column Chromatography (CC) and Preparative Thin Layer Chromatography (PTLC) techniques. The structural elucidations were performed by spectral methods notably Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy one-dimentional (1H, 13C and DEPT) and two-dimentional (COSY, HMQC/HSQC and HMBC)...

C23-Carbazole Alkaloids from the bark of Murraya koenigii (L.) Spreng
Tan Siow Ping, Nafiah Mohd Azlan, Ahmad Kartini,
Murraya koenigii (Rutaceae), locally known as curry leaf tree, is a medicinally important herb of Indian origin and now is widely distributed throughout southern Asia. The bark of Malayan Murraya koenigii was investigated for phytochemical content. The isolation of chemical constituents from its hexane extract was carried out by using various chromatographic techniques. Spectroscopic methods, including NMR, IR, UV, MS spectra data, were used for the structural characterization. Four C23-carbazole alkaloids were isolated..

Phytochemical study of stem bark from Alstonia spathulata Bl. (Apocynaceae)
Tee Chuan Thing, Lee Yean Shan, Tan Siow Ping, Awang Khalijah, Nafiah Mohd Azlan, Ahmad Kartini,
In Malaysia, Alstonia spathulata Bl. is locally known as ‘Pulai Basong’ which distribute in peat forest. The separation of the chemical components from hexane and DCM crude extract of Alstonia spathulata was carried out using column chromatography (CC) and thin layer chromatography (TCL) techniques. A total of five known compound were isolated from the stem bark extracts and identified as: β-amyrin, β-amyrin acetate, lupeol acetate, stigmasterol and β-sitosterol. The elucidation structures of these compounds were established using 1D-NMR (1H, 13C and DEPT) and 2D-NMR (COSY, HSQC, HMBC) spectroscopic analysis, involving also comparison with data from the literature...

Anticancer effect of hypophyllanthin, niranthin and lintetralin from phyllanthus amarus on HeLa cells and NIH/3T3 cells.
Mohd Azlan Nafiah
Phyllanthus amarus which is locally known as Dukung Anak was one of the herb used in traditional medicine and research of P. amarus in Malaysia was not widely reported. This present research has isolated three chemical compounds and its anticancer effect of this species has been determined. Three lignans namely hypophyllanthin was afforded from hexane crude while niranthin and lintetralin were afforded from ethanol crude. Anticancer test against HeLa cells and NIH/3T3 cells by MTT assays was tested for its anticancer effect. The result shows that hypophyllanthin was considered to possess an active anticancer effect on HeLa cells than NIH/3T3 cells compared to niranthin and lintetralin.  ..
