Teaching and learning international survey (TALIS): secondary analysis of Malaysian database

Abstract

This research is a secondary analysis of Malaysian TALIS database. TALIS is an International study undertaken by Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) that focus on the working conditions of teachers and the learning environment in schools. TALIS examine aspects of teachers' professional development, teacher beliefs, attitudes and practices, teacher appraisal and feedback, and school leadership from the point of view of teachers and school principals. Using the TALIS database, this research examines the aspect of teacher beliefs, attitudes and practices and its influence on teacher self-efficacy. Statistical analysis techniques such as Item Response Theory (IRT), Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) were employed in this research. Findings of the research indicate that there are significant relationships between teachers' self-efficacy and teachers' beliefs, attitudes and practices. Abstract

Murid-murid bermasalah pembelajaran teruk tanpa pertuturan turut mendapat peluang untuk belajar dalam Program Integrasi Pendidikan Khas Bermasalah Pembelajaran. Mereka berkomunikasi dengan guru dan rakan-rakan menggunakan bahasa isyarat sendiri. Perkara ini tentu menyukarkan mereka kerana tidak boleh berinteraksi secara bebas dengan orang di sekeliling mereka. Murid-murid bermasalah pembelajaran teruk tanpa pertuturan boleh mendapat manfaat daripada sistem pendidikan yang mereka hadiri jika guru dan murid menggunakan komunikasi augmentatif dan alternatif dalam proses P&P. Satu kajian kualitatif telah dijalankan secara naratif inkuiri sebagai kaedah kajian. Data dikumpul melalui pemerhatian di dalam bilik darjah, temu bual dan analisis bukti dokumen. Abstract

Kajian kes ini terbahagi kepada dua fasa. Fasa I bertujuan untuk meninjau persepsi pelajar tingkatan 4 terhadap cara perlakuan metakognitif dengan menggunakan soal selidik berdasarkan “Reliability and Validity of State Metacognitive Inventory: Potential for alternative assessment” yang diperkenalkan oleh O’Neil dan Abedi. Fasa 2 dilaksanakan secara temu bual beipasangan dengan menggunakan instrumen soalan penyelesaian aljabar dan protokol temu bual. Sampel kajian terdiri daripada 238 orang pelajar tingkatan empat di sepuluh buah sekolah menengah harian. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa persepsi pelajar-pelajar tingkatan empat tentang perlakuan metakognitif semasa menyelesaikan masalah bagi matematik tambahan adalah memuaskan dengan minnya adalah 2.77. Pelajar-pelajar yang berpencapaian cemerlang mempunyai persepsi yang lebih positif semasa menyelesaikan masalah berbanding dengan pelajar berpencapaian sederhana dan lemah. Abstract

Kajian ini bertujuan untuk mengenal pasti persepsi guru matematik sekolah rendah tentang pengetahuan standard pengajaran matematik dan komponen yang menyumbang kepada Standard Pengajaran Matematik. Metodologi kajian ini berbentuk kuantitatif yang menggunakan instrumen soal selidik dengan skala likert lima point bagi mengukur tahap persepsi terhadap lima komponen pengetahuan standard pengajaran matematik iaitu pengetahuan atribut ikhtisas, pengetahuan amalan ikhtisas, pengetahuan ikhtisas, pengetahuan proses pengajaran dan pembelajaran ikhtisas dan pengetahuan pentaksiran berdasarkan standard-standard yang diamalkan di dalam dan luar negara. Kajian ini melibatkan 361 orang guru matematik sekolah rendah di Perak yang dipilih melalui persampelan rawak berstrata. Abstract

Aktiviti membentuk doh boleh diaplikasikan untuk membantu murid bermasalah pembelajaran mempelajari kemahiran mengenal huruf. Kajian ini bertujuan untuk melihat sejauh mana aktiviti menggunakan membentuk doh dapat membantu meningkatkan penguasaan mengenal huruf dalam kalangan murid bermasalah pembelajaran. Kajian eksperimental kuasi dijalankan terhadap enam orang murid bermasalah pembelajaran yang dipilih secara pensampelan bertujuan di tiga buah sekolah menengah yang menjalankan Program Pendidikan Khas Integrasi (Masalah Pembelajaran) di dua buah daerah di negeri Perak Darul Ridzuan. Kumpulan kawalan di Sekolah A terdiri daripada dua orang murid (M1 dan M2) manakala rawatan dijalankan di Sekolah B dan Sekolah C. M3 dan M4 di Sekolah B menerima Rawatan 1 menggunakan aktiviti membentuk doh manakala M5 dan M6 di Sekolah C menerima Rawatan 2 menggunakan aktiviti percikan. Culture of poverty among the poor Malays in Seri Medan subdistrict of Batu Pahat, Johor

Abstract

In recent years, cultural factors have been revisited in the poverty research agenda. The culture of poverty is claimed to be one of the main factors leading to the poor being trapped in poverty. The objective of this paper is to explore the culture of poverty that caused the poor to remain living under the poverty line in Malaysia. The study was conducted on 313 poor Malay household heads at Seri Medan, Batu Pahat, Johor. The data of the poor was obtained using the e-Kasih information system (heads of household in Seri Medan) at Batu Pahat District Office. Questionnaire survey and interviews were then conducted on related poor head of households. The findings show that the culture of poverty had the highest mean score of 3.17 compared to other poverty contributing factors. Abstract

This article presents a literature review on improving reading skills, and recommendations for reading skills that prepare children for the world of tomorrow. Remediation should begin as soon as a child is diagnosed as having problems with reading. As the demand for digital know-how has dramatically increased in recent years, interactive media has become a basic tool in today’s classroom. Children with weak working memory, and with difficulties in the rapid processing of information, need to be assisted to use digital literacy skills. Underachievers usually show a gap between their functional knowledge and performance potential. In order to prevent this gap from widening, underachievers are advised to work at their own functional level to overcome their deficits. This study aims to analyze the need for developing PISA type problems in change and relationship content designed to assess mathematical representation abilities. This research is a type of development research by adapting the Tessmer development model. This research was conducted in two stages, namely the preliminary stage, namely preparation and design, then the formative evaluation phase which included self evaluation, prototyping, small group, and field tests. This research is limited to the prototyping stage. The subjects of this study were SMK Diponegoro Depok students, Indonesia.
