Failure of ETeMS the teaching courseware factor

Abstract

This study was carried out in response to the announcement of the reversal of the ETeMS policy (English in the Teaching of Mathematics and Science) which had been practiced by teachers in Malaysia since 2003. The Ministry of Education took a drastic approach in gradually halting this controversial policy for several related reasons, namely the poor performance of students and teachers in applying the policy and also political pressure by Malay language activists. The main objective of the study is to investigate whether or not the application of CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning), in this case is the application of teaching courseware, is one of the contributing factors to the failure of ETeMS. Abstract

Kajian ini adalah untuk menganalisis pengajaran mata pelajaran Matematik ke arah aplikasi kognisi dalam Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Rendah (KSSR) di sebuah sekolah rendah melalui Kaedah Hermeneutik. Kajian ini melibatkan enam orang guru yang mengajar mata pelajaran Matematik KSSR di sebuah sekolah rendah yang terletak di Sungai Siput (U), daerah Kuala Kangsar. Sampel kajian adalah berdasarkan borang soal selidik yang diedarkan kepada mereka. Hasil kajian didapati terdapat tiga masalah utama yang dihadapi oleh murid, iaitu sukar memahami konsep matematik, sukar mengingati istilah atau kata kunci matematik dan juga masalah dalam penyelesaian masalah matematik. Guru juga menghadapi tiga masalah utama dalam pengajaran Matematik, iaitu bahan rujukan matematik kurang, guru tidak berpengalaman atau guru bukan opsyen Matematik dan masa pengajaran dan pembelajaran Matematik tidak mencukupi. Pemikiran rasionalisme dalam kumpulan sajak moden Kaliaperumal

Abstract

Objektif kajian ini adalah untuk mengenal pasti pemikiran rasionalisme, menganalisis kerelevenan pemikiran rasionalisme yang terdapat dalam sajak moden karya Kaliaperumal serta latar belakang dan kepengarangan Kaliaperumal. Kumpulan sajak moden Ponman:i Kan:aikal: dan Ponman:i Cinhthanaikal: dipilih sebagai bahan kajian. Walaupun terdapat sebanyak 203 buah sajak, hanya sejumlah 143 buah sajak dari kedua-dua kumpulan mencerminkam pemikiran rasionalisme. Reka bentuk kajian menggunakan kaedah kualitatif deskriptif. Kaedah ini memberi keterangan tentang sifat dan keadaaan manusia serta memperoleh maklumat berkualiti dengan memberikan tumpuan pada kedua-dua kumpulan sajak moden Kaliaperumal. Kajian ini menggunakan teori rasionalisme dengan menekankan faktor institusi sosial, ekonomi dan politik. Lets Kahoot! for diverse time and place

Abstract

Blended learning allows one to approach a complex problem with reason, it creates ample opportunities for learners and educators to communicate at different levels. Learners become motivated and hence productive. A form of blended learning that makes use of gamification is Kahoot! Educators and learners are easily able to comprehend this software as it is similar to that of computer games whereby the focus is on education. The study was carried out brings forth a few positive as well as negative implications of Kahoot! in a classroom. Kahoot! was carried out on a class of 22 first year diploma students and personal interviews were carried out. The major finds were that 100% of the students expressed interest in Kahoot! as a learning tool. The idea of using gamification to teach a theoritical subject was well received by the the students. Children with special needs, especially those with disability in mental, physical or social/emotional interactions, are marginalized. Many people still view them as being troublesome, having learning difficulties, unproductive and burdensome to society. The objectives of the research are; to identify whether musical drama can control the coordination of mental function of children; to identify whether musical drama can improve communication ability and expression of children; to discern whether musical drama can help children work with people around them; to find out if musical dramas can develop a child's emotional and physical health; to find out if musical drama can improve children's creativity. Abstract

The purpose of this research is to study how effectively collaborative writing essay can help to improve ESL students’ essay writing skills. The main aim of the study is to ascertain if collaborative writing helped to improve students’ essays in aspects like organization, development and structure. This study aims to determine if students who are engaged in collaborative writing show a greater improvement in essay writing compared to students who write using the traditional (syllabus based) writing method. The effects of the collaborative writing method on the attitudes and perception of the learners were also established. The findings of the study showed that the students are able to generate ideas and develop a change in attitude towards writing after going through the collaborative writing treatment. A case study of self-directed learning using movie to promote oral communication

Abstract

The main aim of this study is to help EFL students’ improve their oral communication proficiency out-of-class. To achieve that, video-movie was chosen as a medium for improving the subjects' oral communication proficiency. It was hoped that movie could function as a pseudo-immersion for the students, an accessible and easy alternative to being in the English native countries. Based on that, this study aim has been transformed into this research question ‘what effect does self-directed learning using movies has on the students' perceived oral communication proficiency?’. Correlation between EFL students perceived linguistic proficiency and their level of confidence in using English

Abstract

The main aim of this study is to find out the correlation between EFL students’ perceived linguistic proficiency and their level of confidence in using English. To achieve that, sixty first year students at the faculty of English language and literature, Ajloun University in Jordan, were selected based on convenience sampling. The subjects were asked to self-assess their linguistic proficiency using five-point Likert scale and to respond to the survey questionnaire. To test the statistical associations between the two variables, ANOVA was used to confirm if there were any statistically significant differences in self- assessment scores among the groups of students having different levels of confidence. To confirm where the differences lie, Post Hoc tests (Turkey HSD and Homogeneous Subsets) were used.
