| 11081 | 2006 Thesis | Prior knowledge in reading and comprehension Maria Shu Hong Bee Abdullah This research investigates a group of primary five students utilizing their prior knowledge as they construct meaning while reading the expository texts in the English as the Second Language (ESL) classroom. In this case, the students are viewed as bringing personal meaning actively to the reading process. The reading comprehension lessons were carried out with a group of elementary students’ reading behaviours being observed and audio-recorded and the data were collected and analyzed qualitatively. The KWLS grid was used to assist students to activate their prior knowledge by generating questions and discussion to construct meaning while reading. Activating and developing prior knowledge presents background material supporting the importance of schemata and prior knowledge for literacy development. | 11082 | 2005 Thesis | The relationship between classroom instructions and English as a second language (ESL) achievement among secondary school students from different socio-economic status, gender and ethnic groups: a case study Bodjit Kaur Ram Singh This case study investigated the relationship between classroom instructions, socioeconomic status, and English as a second language (ESL) achievement among selected upper secondary school students from different socio-economic status, gender and ethnic groups in the district of Teluk Intan, Perak. It utitilized a survey research design with emphasis on the correlational method of analysis. Based on the findings of this study, the results indicate that there is a significant difference in the mean scores of the academic performance between male and female students. Therefore, there is a statistically significant difference in the academic performance of students learning English from different gender groups. On the other hand, there is no statistically significant relationship between the students perception of the effectiveness of classroom instructions and their academic performance in learning English. | 11083 | 2009 Thesis | Penggunaan strategi membaca teks akademik dalam kalangan pelajar peringkat tertiari Idris Mohd Radzi The objective of this study is to investigate the use of reading strategies for academic text among tertiary level students. There were 12 respondents selected voluntarily to give information for this study. A 2, 004 words academic text were used as an instrument of this study. The researcher used two methods of data collection, they were: think aloud protocol and text retelling protocol. Respondents were asked to read the passage individually and do the think aloud protocol based on their readings. Later on, they do the reading for the second time before they were asked to do the text retelling protocol. The readings and retelling were recorded for transcription. Findings show that respondents have been using 17 types of reading strategies to understand the text. There were three types of reading strategies used frequently by the respondents, they were elaborating strategies (36.37%), rereading strategies (22.61%) and paraphrase strategies (20.39%). The study made use of the ex post facto approach to study the main independent variable, motivational approaches, in retrospect for their possible effects to the dependent variable, interest in learning. The research instrument utilised a questionnaire to collect data from 150 Form Four students through stratified random sampling from two schools in Matang District, Taiping, Perak. This study also examined the relationship between all the variables and their influence on the athletes’ performance. Instruments used in this study were Motives for Sports Participation (MPS), Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire (TEOSQ), athlete’s preferred and perceived version of the Leadership Scale for Sport (LSS). The whole population of the two Malaysian Sports Schools for the year 2007 (N = 854; SSBJ = 409, SSBP = 445) were recruited for this study. Pendekatan kualitatif digunakan bagi membangun ujian dan pendekatan kuantitatif digunakan bagi mengenal pasti kebolehpercayaan dan kesahan ujian.
