Statistical analysis of green laboratory practice survey: conservation on non-distilledwater from distillation process
Chan, Siok Yee
The water crisis is identified as the most serious global risk for the coming decade. Distilled water is one of the on-demand elements in academic laboratories; however, water scarcity may eventually affect the education sector, necessitating the implementation of new policies. Human behavior, awareness, knowledge, and opinion is having an impact on water management; accordingly, a questionnaire was purposely designed and validated to assess these variables in a Malaysian public university regarding the use of non-distilled water produced by the distillation process. An exploratory factor analysis yielded four factors: ?concept of green laboratory and water?, ?usage of non-distilled water?, ?knowledge about water distillation?, and ?behavior related to water conservation?. Using the Mann-Whitney U test to compare laboratory and non-laboratory users? responses, the variables ?Knowledge?, ?Behavior?, and ?Opinion? revealed statistically significant differences, with laboratory users scor.....

Spatial torrential rainfall modelling in pattern analysis based on robust pca approach
Shazlyn Milleana Shaharudin
In this research work, the pattern of spatial cluster had been identified for torrential rainfall data within the context of Peninsular Malaysia, which experiences heavy pour annually. Hence, a robust Principal Component Analysis (PCA) technique was employed in this study in order to address problem related to non-balance cluster(s) across patterns of rainfall stemming from skewed rainfall data. To analyze the observations made, Tukey?s biweight correlation was applied. For PCA components extraction, the optimum breakdown point was determined based on the proposed method. In order to strike a balance for extraction of number of components, as well as to hinder insignificant spatial scale or low-frequency variation, the simulation data recorded a breakdown point at 70% cumulative percentage of variance. The study outcomes revealed that the robust PCA gave better enhancement than the Pearson-based PCA did for cluster average number and quality. The findings indicate that ten rainfall pat.....

Source of apportionment of air quality parameters at federal port of Malaysia with emphasis on ship emission
Mohd Saiful Samsudin
Air pollution is becoming a major environmental issue in Malaysia. Centered on data obtained from the Malaysian Department of Environment (DOE), this analysis focused on identifying possible causes of air quality heterogeneity across the research area. 14 air quality parameters in 7 monitoring stations for ten years (2009-2018) were gathered. To determine the source of air pollution around the study region, the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) approach from a chemometric methodology was applied. The PCA method has identified three varimax factor (VF) with 11 air quality parameters are the most significant parameters around the study area. It can be inferred from the analysis that the use of the PCA approach in chemometric techniques can be applied for the purpose of source apportionment. Accordingly, this study suggested that efforts should be put as a priority in the monitoring of ships emissions sources in Malaysia Federal Ports area and successful management of Malaysian air quali.....

Some emerging opportunities of nanotechnology development for soilless and microgreen farming
Mohd Zobir Hussein
Global food demand has increased in tandem with the world?s growing population, prompting calls for a new sustainable agricultural method. The scarcity of fertile soil and the world?s agricultural land have also become major concerns. Soilless and microgreen farming combined with nanotechnology may provide a revolutionary solution as well as a more sustainable and productive alternative to conventional farming. In this review, we look at the potential of nanotechnology in soilless and microgreen farming. The available but limited nanotechnology approaches in soilless farming include: (1) Nutrients nanoparticles to minimize nutrient losses and improve nutrient uptake and bioavailability in crops; (2) nano-sensing to provide real-time detection of p H, temperature, as well as quantifying the amount of the nutrient, allowing desired conditions control; and (3) incorporation of nanoparticles to improve the quality of substrate culture as crop cultivation growing medium. Meanwhile, potentia.....

Solvatochromism and theoretical studies of dicyanobis(phenylpyridine)iridium(III) complex using density functional theory
Noorshida Mohd Ali
Luminescent cyanometallate [Ir(ppy)2(CN)2]? (ppy = C6H5C5H4N) has recently gained attention due to its desired photophysical properties. Our research group reported that the [Ir(ppy)2(CN)2]? has shown a negative solvatochromism like [Ru(bipy)(CN)4]2?, resulting in a blue-shift of the UV-Vis absorption bands in the water. Therefore, to gain insight into the specific solvent-solute interaction governed by the hydrogen bond in the solvation hydration shell, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed on the singlet ground state of the [Ir(ppy)2(CN)2]? and its solvent environment in the water at B3LYP level theory. It was demonstrated, seven water molecules provided a good description of the relevant spectra: IR and UV-Vis. The calculation reproduced the positions and intensities of the observed ?(C?N) bands at 2069 and 2089 cm?1. The calculated MLCT transition wavelength was 366 nm vs. a measured value of 358 nm, differing by 8 nm. The study revealed the water molecules in.....

Short-term forecasting of daily confirmed Covid-19 cases in Malaysia using RF-SSA model
Shazlyn Milleana Shaharudin
Novel coronavirus (COVID-19) was discovered in Wuhan, China in December 2019, and has affected millions of lives worldwide. On 29th April 2020, Malaysia reported more than 5,000 COVID-19 cases; the second highest in the Southeast Asian region after Singapore. Recently, a forecasting model was developed to measure and predict COVID-19 cases in Malaysia on daily basis for the next 10 days using previously-confirmed cases. A Recurrent Forecasting-Singular Spectrum Analysis (RF-SSA) is proposed by establishing L and ET parameters via several tests. The advantage of using this forecasting model is it would discriminate noise in a time series trend and produce significant forecasting results. The RF-SSA model assessment was based on the official COVID-19 data released by the World Health Organization (WHO) to predict daily confirmed cases between 30th April and 31st May, 2020. These results revealed that parameter L = 5 (T/20) for the RF-SSA model was indeed suitable for short-time series ou.....
