Extraction of gold from gravity-flotation concentrates via surfactant and oxidation reagents
Muhammad Noorazlan Abd Azis
The focus of this work is to establish a hydrometallurgical technique for efficiently extracting gold from the aggregated gold-rich concentrate produced by a mining facility in one of Kazakhstan's deposits. The leaching techniques applied to gravity-flotation concentrates include hydrometallurgical gold recovery processes using the surfactant sulfanol and the oxidizing reagent trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCCA). The findings indicate the effectiveness of leaching gravity-flotation concentrates with oxidizing (accelerating) reagents. Gold extraction through cyanidation of the blended concentrate, ground to 89–90% passing 10 µm with TCCA, averaged 84.0%, compared to 65.76–67.8% with conventional direct cyanidation. The advantage of employing chlorine-based oxidants, such as TCCA, in hydrometallurgical processing lies in their applicability in both acidic and alkaline environments, whereas other oxidants are constrained by specific technological conditions. Technical trichloroisocyanu.....

Antibacterial properties of cassava starch/xanthan gum/zinc oxide nanoparticles coating solution and physicochemical analysis of coated banana (Musa acuminata) for shelf-life extension
Suriani Abu Bakar
Bananas serve as a nutrient-rich energy source for human diets, and a valuable raw material for downstream products. Despite the high demand for bananas, they have a relatively short shelf-life. To mitigate these shortcomings, researchers have explored the use of edible coatings to extend the shelf-life of bananas. Nevertheless, only a few studies have assessed the integration of starch, gum, and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) in developing a coating solution that can preserve the qualities of bananas post-harvest. Therefore, the present work assessed the antibacterial properties of a novel edible coating formulation combining cassava starch, xanthan gum, and ZnONPs, and its impact on the physicochemical characteristics and shelf-life of bananas of the ‘Pisang Berangan’ variety (Musa acuminata). Firstly, coating solutions with compositions of cassava starch, xanthan gum, and varying concentrations of ZnONPs were prepared. Their antibacterial properties were then assessed using t.....

Mitigating plagiarism in ESL academic writing: Evaluating the efficacy of educational intervention
Mohd Haniff Mohd Tahir
Background: Plagiarism is a serious academic misconduct demanding mitigation to uphold the integrity of original work. Undeniably, with the advancement of technological age, plagiarising becomes easier and harder to detect. However, the reliance on technology significantly rises the likelihood of fostering academic dishonesty among the students. Therefore, it is imperative to disseminate explicit education on plagiarism reduction strategies, particularly on the importance of mastering correct referencing techniques. Purpose: The present study applied a mixed-method approach to explore the effectiveness of an intervention called Educational Intervention (EI) on enhancing ESL students’ academic referencing skills namely in in-text citation abilities, paraphrasing skills and writing reference list using APA style. Method: The EI consisted of explicit instruction that involved structured teaching sessions integrated with two primary instructional strategies: lectures and practical exerci.....

Enhancing educational ecosystems: Implementing peter senge's learning organization model in Islamic boarding schools
Miftachul Huda
The inability of pesantren in the 21st-century era of knowledge and technology to maintain its classical madrasah system raises significant questions. Therefore, understanding how Madrasah Hidayatul Mubtadiin (MHM) in Lirboyo, Kediri City, as one of the Salafiyah Islamic Boarding Schools, adapts to its environment through the implementation of Peter Senge's five learning organization (LO) disciplines is crucial. This research adopts a qualitative approach, employing a case study methodology. Data were gathered through observations, interviews, and documentation. The findings indicate that the implementation of LO at MHM Lirboyo Madrasah aligns well with the five disciplines of a learning organization. These include: 1) Personal mastery among teachers is demonstrated through self-reflection, exemplary behavior, diligence, and consistency in adhering to institutional rules. 2) Mental models cultivated through tolerant behavior, respect, awareness of the importance of learning, high motiv.....

Recyclable and reusable catalyst of chitosan-modified mgal-layered double hydroxide for biodiesel production
Azlan Kamari
Study of chitosan modification to MgAl-LDH to increase surface basicity for improving biodiesel production from palm oil has been performed. Modification was conducted by chitosan gel impregnation onto prepared MgAl-LDH. Furthermore, the physicochemical character of material was evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, gas sorption analysis, and determination of solid basicity. The XRD, specific surface area, pore distribution, and TEM analyses confirmed the reduced specific surface area due to the exfoliated LDH conformation. However, the increased surface basicity aroused from the modification leads to improved catalytic activity and yield. The maximum biodiesel yield of 92.8 % was achieved by the methanol to oil ratio of 10:1 at 90 °C for 2 h. The prominent reusability until the 5th cycle of usage without significant activity change is a potency for advocating the suitability of the low-cost catalysis technology for comme.....

Bioconcentration of heavy metals in milkfish reared in stick-net pens system: Implications for open water environmental contamination and food safety
Nasir Nayan
The coast of Tanjung Mas, Semarang City, is an industrial area used by the community to cultivate milkfish using stick-net pens. Furthermore, heavy metal contamination such as Cr, Cd, Cu, and Pb potentially disrupts milkfish meat's growth, quality, and safety. This study aims to determine heavy metals concentration in the waters and milkfish meat in stick-net pens cultivation in Tanjung Mas, Semarang City. The study was conducted using exploration, with five observation sites representing household waste disposal flow, industrial discharge, open sea, and intermediate areas. The observation sites were selected based on the milkfish cultivation activity. The sample and data, including water, milkfish, and environmental factors (temperature, pH, salinity, water current, and dissolved oxygen), were collected three times every two weeks. The heavy metals were detected using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS). The highest heavy metal concentration is Cr, which ranges from 1.70 ± 0.32 ppm .....

Boon or bane: A systematic review of virtual reality application in landscape architecture design stage
Asilah Abdul Mutalib
The application of Virtual Reality (VR) in the design process has gained growing attention as the technology accelerates the potential of designing spaces in the landscape architecture field, particularly for educational purposes. As VR can be described as a computer-generated environment that closely resembles reality, its application may expand the visual sense and comprehension in promoting natural interaction between humans and the environment. However, the potential and limitations of integrating VR applications in landscape architecture design are still being determined. Therefore, the study aims to evaluate the potentials and limitations of VR application in the landscape architecture design stage where VR technology is currently applied. Forty (40) papers were thoroughly reviewed using PRISMA as a systematic literature review tool. The study found that VR enhances visualisation, immersion, interactivity, and spatial thinking in the landscape design process. However, the applica.....

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on children's social, emotional, and moral development: A systematic literature review
Zaharah Osman
This research aims to better understand how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected children's social, emotional, and moral development. Articles and related studies were gathered from the Education Resources Information Centre (ERIC), Scopus, and Science Direct databases. After a quality review following the PRISMA 2020 protocol, 16 articles were selected for a systematic literature review (SLR). The findings from this review were organized into four main themes: (1) the impact of technology and distance learning on children, (2) children's behavior and emotions, (3) the conditions of people around them, and (4) social support. It is suggested that future studies focus on the positive effects of COVID-19 on education. © 2024 The Authors...
